What ohm cab should I use if I plan to use the external speaker jack with the internal speaker still plugged in?

Read your owner's manual. It will tell you there.

According to the owner's manual, the amp is only designed to handle an 8 ohm speaker load which is the value of the stock, internal speaker.

http://support.fender.com/manuals/guita ... manual.pdf

Looking at the schematic of the amplifier shows that the internal speaker utilizes a shorting jack. If a speaker is not connected to the internal speaker jack, the output transformer is shorted to ground. This is safer than having an open circuit on the output transformer which could damage the transformer if no speaker is connected.

http://support.fender.com/schematics/gu ... ematic.pdf

It would appear that the only way to use an external speaker with the internal speaker would be to use an 8 ohm or higher external speaker. An 8 ohm external speaker with the internal speaker would give a total load impedance of 4 ohms. A 16 ohm external speaker used with the internal speaker would give a total load of about 5.3 ohms. As both values are lower than the specified minimum of 8 ohms, there is a risk (possibly slight) that the output transformer could be damaged. The warranty may not cover any damage caused by this.

You could use an external 8 ohm speaker without using the internal speaker by plugging in an open circuit phone plug into the internal speaker jack. This would break the ground circuit of the internal speaker jack and allow an external speaker to operate by itself.

Since neither of these connections is discussed in the owner's manual, connecting speakers in either way would be at your own risk. This is a poor design in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply! YES, poor design indeed for such a sweet amp! I actually love the sound of the SS22 through the stock speaker but, wanted a lil more low end that cannot be achieved with the open back design. A 8ohm 2x12 closed back plugged into the internal speaker input should do the trick! THANKS!

The thread that twirlyboggs referenced and what I posted say basically the same thing. I also tend to err on the side of conservatisim when it comes to expensive electronic equipment. Plugging an external speaker into the internal jack with nothing in the external jack would be the safest approach. Just make sure the amp is turned off.
