Ok, nothing wrond with the AC30...just wrong with me I guess. I found out you need the volume on the guitar cranked to overdrive the tubes. No matter the channel or volume, if you back off on the guitar volume, you'll clean up the sound. Lesson learned...

Good to know you find it

Indeed, but heard about reliability issues with YJ's - do you know their cost?

Views/reviews in a DRRI?

Oh dear, this probably counts as a 'Mod' so I'm putting my crash helmet on right now....

I'm not hi-jacking, I'm commenting on a developing theme of EL84s, but I'll spare you any further pain.

Thank you for caring.

Over & out.

No pain to me. The OP asked a specific question which has been answered. It's an interesting topic that deserves its own thread.

With a little experience I've had with vintage Vox AC30---they need tough EL84's. The amp pushes them pretty hard (pseudo Class "A") and there isn't a great venting scheme to eliminate the heat build-up. Some modern EL84 can't this kinda abuse, for long.

I've had good luck with 1970-80's Hungarian Tungsrams & Reflektor 6N14P-EV (the OTK approved mil-spec tube. Similar to the hardier 7189). They can take the abuse of the original Vox AC30. Like the original Mullard EL84 of the 1960's.

Just an FYI...

.

What is my experience with those vintage Vox is they are desinging to work at 110 volts wall outlet in North America and we have now 120 and even more and this give a too high B+ with a too hot bias , 100 % power dissipation and I see more.

Best thing I found is to reduce B+ at the right desing operating voltage and the amp ( tubes ) work normally. It can work with modern tubes too.

+1 on the 7189, excellent for the tough environment like AC30 or BJr.
