You saw sparks and smoke, but thought you would try another fuse anyway?

Maybe trying three or four more fuses would make it work?

Sorry, I just can't follow this one. :(

Yes, I replaced the fuse so i could turn it on for a second to see where the sparks were coming from, i didnt do it thinking it would work, I needed to know where the issue was.

Anyways, i replaced a transformer in a previous amp, and put one in a Deluxe I built and sold (not the Deluxe Reverb, just he Deluxe; input, vol, tone) with Mercury Magnetics transformer. They were about $200. ONe for a Deluxe Hot Rod is $250, but I have an amp guy in Boston that will replace the blown one w/a mercury one, and it'll be $275 w/installation. So it may work out in then end.

Plus, the output trans is the last component before the speaker, so the only thing that can be damaged from the transformer itself is the speaker, which wasnt .

He also told me that output transformers on the HOt Rod series are prone to blow. He says he does a few every month, including 2 of his sons.

Open wire from amp to speaker, or short output tubes can also damaged output transformer or all abused of amp which reproduce these condition.

I feel bad that an amp was damaged, but there is a reason for those "CAUTION: No user servicable parts inside. Refer all repairs to a qualified technician." labels.

Let's see. The OP takes this amp in trade. Notes that the jewel light is intermittant and complains to the other party. Never says if the other party responded. Goes ahead and uses the amp for two days until the fuse blows. Replaces the fuse without bothering to perform any checks on the amp to try and determine why the fuse blew. The amp subsequently destroys itself. The OP states that since he has only had the amp for two days, it is not his responsibility that the amp failed and he sicks his lawyer on the other party. That about sum it up? Oh, and the OP claims to be a professional? This all sounds pretty amatuerish to me.

Lets not get all personal because you mentioned something about the plated strings that proved wrong. So, you would take the loss of something you bought a day and a half earlier? I doubt it.Yes they responded about the light. He wont take his amp back, so yes, i am going through court system. Im asking him for 1/2 repair cost, which i think is more than fair.
Lets say I found the reason for the fuse blowing is because there is something else wrong; should I still eat the cost, though its only been 2 days? Give me a break. Troll somewhere else. You must live on this site to have 2800 posts since 2010, when do you have the time to play anything?

Amps and pedals is a side thing, guitar repair is the profession.

Did he give you a warranty or anything? If not, you got the amp "as is". As soon as you took possession, it became your responsibility. It is people like you who clog up the court system with frivolous cases. Good luck in court. You'll need it.

Sure, ill let you make your comments, and not respond to them. Don't make disparaging comments, and you'll not receive them.

The guys paying for half the repair. Something IM sure he wouldn't do if a lawyer didn't contact him. So I don't feel bad doing so. IM not going to get screwed over, and just say, "oh well, I guess I lose out." the hell with that.

Try giving advice instead of attacking people who do.

Yes, if you had found the "something else wrong" (maybe a tube), you could have prevented the transformer from blowing (still not convinced that the transformer was sparking). Instead, you might have actually caused it.

Once you opened it up, and replaced the fuse multiple times, with absolutely no troubleshooting at all, I'd say that you could very well have caused the problem to become worse (again, likely a bad tube). If you had taken the amp to a qualified tech when the first fuse blew, and he gave the amp a proper diagnoses, then maybe you would have a stronger case. Maybe even just had the tubes replaced, saving grief for all. Tubes do fail, and they are often the source for the majority of issues with most tube amps. Amateurs, screwing around inside an amp, can do all sorts of goofy things.....like trying the same thing over and over, expecting different results.

I wouldn't give warranty to someone who took the amp apart that isn't qualified, nor replaced the fuse multiple times. Again, the chances that you made it worse seems very possible.

Of any problems with the HRDlx, this is the first I've heard of the OT being "prone to blow", let alone a few every month.

I am all for DIY, and love to help when the person has some moderate electronic skills, but in this case, maybe you should stick to guitars or pedals, and leave the amps to the electrical guys.

I'm one of if not THE biggest HRD basher on the forum, but of all the problems I had with my HRDlx, the trannies were never an issue. We even know a guy who uses the existing iron to do rebuilds.

Two days ago, I traded an Egnater Tweaker for a Deluxe Hot Rod. It worked fine for those 2 days. Today I came home from work and turned it on. I strummed a few chords & it died.

Why not just ask for your Egnater Tweaker back ? If he is willing to pay half of the repair bill he may just trade you back. That's what I'd try to do. JMHO.

As would most people who wouldn't want to cause more damage....it's not very hard to see where something has spewed smoke and sparks....not much reason to fire it up for more fireworks.
