Hi,

I have a fender twin 65 RI and am looking to transfer the amp into a seperate head unit, while I am at it I would like to upgrade the power transformer so that I can use both KT66 and KT88's in the amp as well as 6l6's.

I am looking for any suggestions of specific power transformers that are suitable and if anyone knows if this is the only change that would need to be made in order to run these tubes?

I installed a set of Tung sol kt66's as they draw the same heater current as 6l6's. I love the tone but I use loops in the band I play in and find that with several loops + my guitar the sound gets a bit muddy and undefined whereas a set of JJ 6l6's stays cleaner for longer and retain the definition even at high volume (~6.5). (I use a set of Eminence delta pro 12A speakers so these are definietely not causing the breakup). I am also wondering if anyone knows if KT88's will provide a little more head room and definition at high volume compared to KT66's. I realise alot of people argue the Tung sols are not real KT66's which I do not know, but they definitely sound more like a kt66 than any 6l6 I have heard. I really like all the low end associated with the kt66's as the band is a two piece (drums + guitar).

If you intend to push a quartet of KT88's in this chassis with any hope at all of realizing these tubes' full potential you'd be wise to upgrade the entire power supply to include the power transformer, diode stack rectifier, biasing circuit, filter caps, and choke. Likewise, you'll need an output tranny capable of handling close to 150 watts RMS. Thus, these upgrades (with the new tubes) should cost close to a grand.

Good luck

Arjay
