Was playing it last night, noticed when I let single notes or chords sustain and ring out, sounded like glass vibrating. I didn't have time to let the tubes cool off to check. But I will tonight before I turn it on.

Tried the twisting knob trick, it worked for the most part. It is only scratchy from 0-2 now, but not as bad as before.

I may be screwed for any warranty work. The guy I got it from, received it as a gift. I already asked him about a receipt, and he told me that the serial # could be used. But I had caught one unknowledgable comment he made about the amp, so I was reluctant in believing this one, too. I'm gonna try to get it anyway.

Can these amps be looked up by serial # to see what year it is? Just curious. He said the amp is only 2 months old, and it looks like it, but I've been lied to before.

Sounds like you too may have a microphonic preamp tube in there. Easy to detect by tapping each in turn carefully with the eraser on the end of a pencil when the amp is warmed up. No sound to speak of will come from a healthy valve (just the tap you'd expect) but a microphonic one ring unmistakably. That will need replacing.

I'll try that tonight. If it needs replacing, I have a good list of tubes that I'll use.

My footswitch may the wrong one, but it works. I'm not that worried about it though. Probably won't be using it anyway. But the overdrive channel does sound better than it did in my Hot Rod Deville, so I'm not gonna rule it out.

Also I don't really know a thing about the internals of amps. I trying to learn, but it all sounds like Greek to me. Changing tubes sounds easy enough, but I'm sure about biasing them. Will probably take it to a reputable shop. Anybody know of one in the Houston area?

I will read some more here. Very knowledgable people here on this forum. :D

The two-button switch that you have is probably the exact same switch that should have come with your amp, but one button is labeled as "Chorus" instead of "Reverb", and will likely work just the same. Try it and see if the chorus button doesn't switch off the reverb.

As for the avatar, hover the pointer over the small gear at the top right of the site, then click "Edit Profile". When that screen comes up, look on the right side for a space for a picture. Below the picture space is a button to upload a picture, click upload and choose your picture. (this may be what you've already done)

When I used FF I had some problems getting a picture uploaded, but using IE8 worked fine. I used IE8 for the upload, then use FF as normal. The picture can be very small, a large picture takes longer to upload and will be small on the posts anyway. :?

You can test and replace the preamp tubes (the three little ones) easily enough yourself, no need for biasing or anything. Leave the big guys to the experts, though!

A search of this forum will find multiple threads/posts on biasing a Blues Deluxe Reissue, many of them by yours truly. It is not that difficult and can be safely done if the proper (inexpensive) tools are used and due caution is exercised.

Yeah, I've read alot of threads here about biasing and everything else I could find before purchasing this amp. That's why I bought it. I know I will have to read through them several times more, so it will sink in. It's not that I'm scared to do it, I'm a welder and have been shocked several times in my career, just don't want to create a bigger problem.

What inexpensive tools are you talking about? I have a multimeter, not digital though. It is for checking voltage and amperage of welding. Has a loop at the top of it to put around a welding cable. And it has the two red and white leads with probes also.

I will try everything that everyone on the very helpful forum has mentioned.

I have loaded my pic that way. My work computer has IE8, and this is where I have loaded the pic everytime. I click upload, upload the pic, it turns green, but no pic in the window, and it shows up at the top of the screen next to the gear a few minutes later. I guess I'll just have to upload it everytime I log on. No biggy. Thought something was wrong with the way I was doing it.

Pick up one of these:

http://www.amp-head.com/product_info.ph ... ucts_id=70

It will make checking and setting the bias very easy and safe. I don't know what meter you have but you can get a good digital voltmeter (Fluke is good) for around $30. That plus the bias probe and you are all set to tune your BDRI for best sound and tube life.

I checked all the tubes with a pencil eraser. The one closest to the power tubes (I don't the V positions) made the same noise when I tapped it as it does when I play and let the notes ring out. Sounds like glass rattling.

The scratchy volume pot only makes noise when I playing and move the knob at the same time. If I stop playing, and turn the knob, no noise.

The small tube closest to the output tubes is V3, the "phase inverter" (PI), and it drives the output tubes. Sounds like this tube should be replaced. The choice of tube in this position can affect the headroom of the amp, but not much affect on tone. A lower gain tube in V3 can give more headroom, while a higher gain tube can push the tubes to distortion earlier. The replacement for V3 should be a balanced tube, lots to choose from. If you like the sound that you have now, use the same type tube for the replacement. V3 is a good spot for a 5751 or 12AT7 if you want cleaner sound.

Looking at the back of the amp, starting on the far right and counting to the left, it's V1, V2, which are the preamp tubes, then V3 the PI, then the output tubes V4 and V5.

I would like to have more clean headroom. It does break up a little early for my tastes, between 3 and 4, compared to the HRDeville I used to have, which was somewhere past 5.

Thanks shimmilou for the tube order. I was thinking it was that way, but didn't want to sound like a dumb@$$, and call it something it wasn't.

Looked @ some tubes yesterday, there are alot to choose from. Can't wait to start experimenting with some.

Also, can tubes from another brand of amp be swapped? Just wondering.

Go with the tube configuration I recommended in my earlier post using a 12AY7 in V1. That will reduce the gain enough to allow you to turn the amp up to 6 or more and still stay relatively clean. It also tends to clean up the drive channel more which is how I use it for my humbucker equipped guitars.

Another option would be to use a 5751 in V1 and a 12AT7 in V3 with a 12AX7 in V2. Overall amp gain is about the same as with just a 12AY7 in V1, but the drive channel has a little more, well, drive.

Either configuration with proper bias of the power tubes will give you a nice, relatively clean bluesy sound. It won't be clean like a Twin Reverb, but you didn't buy it for that, right? :D

Yes, you can as long as they are the equivalent type.

I have a Peavey Windsor head that has jj 12AX7's in it. Was gonna take one out of it to put in the BDRI to see if I can temporarily find the problem tube. It is basically the same preamp layout, 2 preamp tubes, and 1 PI. Just has 4 Ruby EL34 power amp tubes, instead of the 2 power amp tubes like the BDRI.

But I definetely want to try your tube setup.

That's a great method; take a known good tube and swap it with the suspect tube.
