alright so i have the fender frontman 212r and ive been happy with it but i dont think it is as loud as it should be. my friend has the fender mustang III and it just overpowers my amp. its smaller and only has one speaker while my frontman is bigger and has two speakers. is there anyway to get my amp louder without having to put the volume up to 10?

It's probably due to loudpeaker "yield" (accoustic power vs electric power), because the power is calculated on voltage on the calibrated resistor, in this way the loudspeaker is not taken into account. Just to explain, if your loud speaker is 3dB less than another one, the accoustic power produced with the same electrical power is 2 times smaller.

Ask him to turn down?

Seriously though, I borrowed an FM212 a while back, mostly to A/B against the Mustang IV I had at the time to see if it was just my ears or there was actually a fuzzy noise from the Mustang. If anything, the Mustang seemed underpowered in comparison, and that's with an extra 50 watts and another speaker over the III. FM sounded much, much nicer too, I was rather shocked at how decent they sound for such a cheap amp. It was partly what made me come to my senses, sell the Mustang and go back to my good old tube rig.

EQ settings can have a huge impact on apparent levels - if you have the mid scooped and he has his way up, you're going to struggle to be heard regardless of level.

I put two 8ohm Eminence Texas Heats in my Frontman 212R, it will keep up with my friends Peavey Classic 100 head with 4-10's pretty good. I use an amp stand to get it off of the floor a little and use a Hardwire CM2 Tube Overdrive for grit and boost and a Big Muff Pi with Tone/Wicker for wildness...

I have a Mustang V with a 2 x 12 ext. with two 16ohm Eminence Texas Heats and it will cover up the same Peavey Classic 100, we were doing a battle of the amp test in his garage over the weekend. He stuck a 4x12 Mesa Boogie cab under the 4 x10 and it blew away my Mustang V rig.

I hooked a Blues Jr. up to the 4 x 12 Mesa Boogie later and it kept up pretty good with the Peavey Classic 100 with the 4 x10's, but not like the Frontman or the Mustang.

I do get a somewhat fuzzy noise on my Mustang on some of the settings, but so does my Blues Deluxe if I use certain pedals. I like the results of the Mustang V amp so far, I don't think it is as reliable as my Frontman 212R, judging from the first Mustang V, I got that burned up in about two hours of playing. The replacement has turned on every time so far and no magic smoke has escaped. I use my solid state amps for banging around in the garage and my tube amps are mostly used in a studio situation or a gig, but I have been tracking with the Mustang V a little bit lately..

Try not to make an opinion on the Mustang until you have really tried one for a bit yourself. They are a GREAT value for the money but, if your buddy hasn't really done much preset tweaking you will be less than impressed. I think Fender makes their factory presets sound deliberately crappy just to make you get in there and turn a knob or two. It comes with software that is absolutely necessary to getting the amp to sound right. The Mustang forum is filled with threads from guys who complain about the same thing...they buy it get it home and have never even hooked it up to their computer. If you get a Mustang III or higher they are easier to program but, you still want to use the software. The effects that are available are all very usable and can be turned on and off at will if you buy the 4 button footswitch available for them. I had a Fender M-80 before my Mustang III and I never really liked the Frontman line of amplifiers. I only liked the M-80 because it was stupid-loud. The Mustangs are about as close as you can expect to get to a Fender tube amp without actually buying one. I actually own a Hrdlx but still keep my M-I and M-III for practice and for dragging around to open mic's (often two or three a night...my singer is an open mic junkie and I know how I need to sound on every song). All my tweaks are right there and work the same every time! It is pretty awesome. I can even trade presets between the I and the III!

That's what the volume control is for. Use it!
