Hello,

I would like to experiment with a new preamp tube in my Champ 600, but I can't figure out how to remove the metal cover over the tube. Can someone please explain how to remove the cover so that I can access the tube?

Push down, turn slightly counter clockwise, pull off.

Suggest you read this thread of mine:

Thanks! That did the trick. The new power and preamp tubes seem to have brightened the sound of the amp, which is a nice improvement. I read your thread on the mods, which has inspired me to look for a replacement speaker. I've never handled a soldering iron before, so I'm not ready for the electronics mods.

What tubes did you end up installing? The nice thing about this amp is that with a tube and speaker change (may as well change the grille cloth while you are at it), you are probably at 75% of the tone you get from all the mods combined. The electronic mods are not that difficult as all the parts are marked clearly on the PCB. They can even be done in stages. Removing the tone stack is probably good for 20% with the other mods being more "fine tuning". Grab a soldering iron and practice on something. You will be surprised at how easy things can be.

I used Gold Series Groove Tubes. The 6V6 package indicated a rating of "4", which is supposed to mean normal distortion. There is definitely an improvement in the highs with the new tubes.

I threw JJs in mine, and couldn't be happier. I have heard good things about putting in Tungsols. Now on to the Jensen vs Weber debate and a possible 8".
