I bought a slightly used Blues Jr, less than 1 yr old. Amp is mint, sounds teriffic. After purchasing, I realized the input jack was missing the nut & washer which holds the jack in place. I contacted Fender & they were nice enough to send me the n & w. Simple enough, right?

Wrong - the top of the imput jack seems to have an unthreaded, black plastic collar around it. You can drop the washer over it, but the nut doesn't fit. It seems that if the nut was wide enough, it wouldn't be able to be tightened on the jack. I believe the nut washer are the correct size for this jack, since they were sent from Fender, but who knows.

I realize this sounds idiotic, but does anyone know how to get the nut on the input jack, aside from replacing the entire input jack?

Hi TC219,

Sounds like the "unthreaded" jack is actually stripped, and that's probably why the nut is missing in the first place. The nut that you got from Fender is apparently the wrong size, or it would drop right onto the stripped jack (nut is probably for an uninsulated jack). The only way to fix it would be to replace the jack, which should come with a nut and washer.

The jack is mounted to the circuit board, and if you leave the instrument cable plugged into the jack and don't push on it, the solder connections might last for a while, but might eventually break from being stressed without the nut in place. If the solder connections on the jack break, you will get intermittent sound, or no sound out.

Since the original plastic jack needs to be de-soldered from the board anyway it would be worth considering replacing it with a switchcraft jack and never have to worry about it failing again. You can get them pre-wired with instructions from Billm's website for $10, grab one and have a tech install it if you are unsure.

"You can replace the plastic input jack with an all-metal Switchcraft jack (the industry standard). It comes prewired with Mogami low-noise coaxial cable and includes two Switchcraft isolation washers (one flat, one shoulder washer) to eliminate the possibility of ground loop hum. Requires removing the circuit board and desoldering the old jack with desoldering braid or a solder sucker pump."

Here's a link to his website, the input jack is the 6th item down the page.

Thanks, gentlemen, for the detailed info. Appreciate it. This plastic sleeve on the input jack isn't stripped, just seems to be the way it's designed, which is curious to say the least. I checked other new Blues Jrs in a local music store & it has the same input jack & 'sleeve'.
Either way it makes sense to replace it with a switchcraft. That's what I'll do. Thanks again for your advice.

If it is truly designed that way, isn't loose and you aren't having issues, I wouldn't worry about it. It is quite a job to disassemble and pull the board up to replace the jack. But, I agree that if you do replace it, the Switchcraft is the way to go.

Posting a picture would be nice, especially if this is a different jack than all of the previous BJr versions have.

Thanks. I'll have a tech do it, I can't do it myself. I'll try to post a pic later this week when I have some extra time.
