I was wondering if others here have tried the HRD setup that I've gone with.

Basically, I wasn't too thrilled with the sound of the stock combo. So I tried a a few things and now I'm pretty darned impressed.

1) Swapped the stock Eminence for the Celestion Vintage 30. Not bad.

2) Bought the matching extension cabinet. Bigger improvement. Sound is more balanced and no more honkiness. Very nice. Smooth. Amp seemed to overpower the combo by itself.

3) Removed 6L6s and replaced with adapters and JJ EL84s. Now about half the watts. Went to the drive channel (didn't try more drive) with master volume at 6. Wow. Very cool rock and roll tones start to rip out this stack. Still plenty, PLENTY loud. Hmmm, this rig is a keeper. And this is after plenty a pretty sweet sounding Swart STR-Tweed for several months.

So now I really like my HRD setup.

Anyone else tried the same or something similar with positive results? Crappy results?

mr. pistachio

I bought the extension cab when I got my HRDlx and it does make a difference to my ears. I also had my tech go through and bring it up to III specs with regards to electronics. He also did a bass tone mod that tightened things up tremendously. I now have a very good sounding amp which has a much increased control over tone at all volume levels.

I am quite happy with my amp as it is now.

Cool stuff joe pistachio, I guess that you mean the HRDlx.

+1 on the matching cab, it is a nice improvement with mine also (HRDlx I).

I will try the 6V6 in place of 6L6 in mine in the next week or so, I already have the BJr with EL84s.
