Hey folks!

I have a Blues Deluxe RI which sounds great. I was curious about the Preamp Out jack. I understand its use for effects loops and connecting it to multiple amps. However, I'm not sure about the third option – recording and reinforcement. Does this mean I can directly connect it to a mixing board, a mixer, a PA system, what about a usb computer interface? Can someone be kind and provide some connection examples and explain how this works? Will it mute the amp?

Thanks!

Hi bluesdelux,

You got it! Connect to mixer, PA, interface, another amp, etc. Just about anything that accepts a mono phone plug will work. Using the Preamp Out will not mute the amp, or affect the sound of the amp in any way. I use mine to connect a tuner to keep the tuner out of the signal path. If you want to mute the amp while using the preamp out by itself for recording or whatever, just insert a dummy plug into the "Power Amp In".

Thanks for the info shimmilou! That's a very interesting and great tip about the tuner and the dummy plug! Never knew that was even possible! What if I used the dummy plug and inserted my headphones into the Preamp out so that I don't disturb the neighbors, etc? Is that a possibility?

Yes, but you will only have sound in one side of the headphones, as the preamp out is mono.

Maybe a mono to stereo adapter would work?

Then you could use two sets of headphones, with sound on only one side of each.

Well, that would actually work since I have 4 ears.

That's too funny Retroverbial...lol! Okay, we're gettin off track, although I had some good laughs. I tried using the preamp out into my roland ua4fx interface into my mac. It worked great! It did get distorted though if I turned the amp volume up past 4, even though I lowered/adjusted the input on my interface. Also, I used the dummy plug tip but it didn't work out so great. I used a mono 1/4 adapter and also a 1/4 guitar cord...and yes my headphones! The sound wasn't muted completely on the amp. I'd say the level of volume coming out of the amp speaker was at .5 or .75. Did I not execute the dummy plug tip correctly? Using the headphones was weird. If I moved them or shook them, the sound would come through the amp. So, it seems the power amp in is amplifying whatever I plug into it. I guess its doing its job then.

You may be getting some cross-talk, maybe even from the reverb circuit (which is after the preamp, and still in the output path). Try soldering the two terminals of the dummy plug together to ground out the signal to the op amp for the Power Amp In. Of course, remove the plug from the amp before soldering. Turn the reverb all the way down also when using the dummy plug, as reverb isn't available from the preamp out anyway.

I had never turned my HRDlx amp up loud enough to hear anything while using the dummy plug, keeping the volume low for recording. I'll have to double check mine to see if there is some sound still when using the plug.

As for moving the headphone plug and hearing sound because of it, sounds like the headphone plug isn't that great, maybe try another one. Do the jacks seems solid and tight?

OK, just checked mine and I do hear a very little sound out of the amp when I go above 4 on the volume when using the dummy plug into the Power Amp In, (which is very loud for this amp without the plug). I record with the vol at 2 to 3 and can hear no sound out of the amp at all, at that volume. My dummy plug has both tip and sleeve terminals soldered together, and while I was checking, I un-soldered the terminals and the sound was louder. So, soldering the tip and sleeve terminals together does reduce the output some. And below 4, I have no sound out of the amp with the plug inserted.

Good info. I recorded with my amp vol at 3. I had low but tolarable cross talk. I think I had my reverb up probably mid way though. I'll try turning it down completely and see what happens. If I turned my amp vol below 3 I didn't get a good recording level. However, maybe I just didn't find the magic combination with amp vol and my interface input. I also tried connecting my guitar cord from the power amp in to an effects unit input which was turned off. I got a noticable hum from my amp and then freaked out since no signal was coming out at all. Thought I blew my speaker or something then realized later, somehow I bumped my guitar volume knob down to 0. Boy, was I relieved. I'll check the jacks to see if they're tight, but I think they're ok since this is really one of the very few times I've used them. I'm amazed how LOUD this amp gets even with the volume at 1.5 to 2. Wish there was some more room before it reached house/window-shaking volumes.

The effect output would connect to the Power Amp in. Connecting into the Power Amp In, bypasses the preamp section of the amp, and the sound out of the amp will be from the effect. On the amp, the "Preamp Out" is an output only, and the "Power Amp In" is an input only.

Have you tried using input 2? This won't help the recording level, but is an attenuated input and the amp output will not be as loud when using it.

I still have the cross talk although I turned my reverb down. Didn't do any soldering though and tried a few more dummy plugs. I did get a better recording level after making a few adjustments with the amp volume and interface input. I'm okay with the low level cross talk considering how loud the amp gets with the volume on 3 (with no dummy plug inserted) - which is where I have the amp volume when recording and can control my output using my interface and monitors. If there's any more advice or theories I'd love to hear them. Other than that, I appreciate all the input thus far!
