Need help gang...currently have an HR Deluxe, which I am pretty luke-warm about. I use only the clean channel for reasons that everyone is aware of. I get my dirt from pedals, and just ordered a Carl Martin AC-Tone which should go a long way in giving me great OD sounds.

Now for the dilemma...I am considering three options.

1. I can buy a Twin Reverb Reissue from a guy locally for $575. I would then sell the HRDx. Seems like a great price. My big worries are the size/weight issue, and that it might be too clean and expose all of my errors.
2. I can trade my HRDx for a HR Deville, plus some cash. It would be a 4x10 version. Still concerned about the weight, and though it would sound more lush...would still sound quite a bit like my HRDx, I assume.
3. I can do the Omega Mod to my HRDx. It will be costly ($250 plus shipping). This is supposed to make all channel useable, and might allow me to get rid of some pedals.

I play mostly classic rock type music.

What do you think is the best option?

I should have added...there is also a DRRI locally for $600, so I suppose I could go that route too. But a Twin for the same price felt like a better option.

The DRRI for six bills is a bargain.

If it were me, I'd sell the HR and get a Deluxe Reverb Reissue - great amp, 22 watts is plenty loud for most places and where it's not, a mic through the PA will make it loud enough. Light enough to carry in on hand with guitar in the other, and unlike the Twin, a Deluxe Reverb's power tubes can break up at mid volume. Deluxe Reverb also takes pedals really well.

Omega mod - no sense throwing money on that; you'll love the clean Fender + real fender reverb with a deluxe, even the reissue.

Hi jerryfan6,

The TRRI at that price, if in good shape, is a bargain, and should hold its value well. As you said, it's heavy, very very loud and super clean. You would definitely need pedals to get any kind of distortion at all from the TRRI. How loud do you need, and is your back in great shape?

The 4x10 HRDvl will sound much different than the 1x12 HRDlx. The Dvl is much louder, and punchier/tighter on the low end than the Dlx. You get more of a Bassman sound with the Dvl. So both the clean and drive channels of the Dvl will sound different than the Dlx.

A little modding, and the right combination of tubes might make the HRDlx all that you need. I have found some nice preamp tubes that make the drive channel in my HRDlx sound very nice, while keeping great cleans too, and now I hardly ever use pedals with it, they aren't needed. Of course the value of the HRDlx probably won't increase much because of the mods, so not much return on investment there.

Also, you can add an external speaker cab to the HRDlx for more out of the amp. I use the ext cab made for the HRDlx and it really makes the amp much louder and richer sounding.

I am biased toward the HRDlx myself, and all things considered in this case, if you like the clean sound of the HRDlx, I would mod it and have the most amp I could get in the smallest package. Next, I would choose the DRRI as my second option (also a good deal at $600). Third would be to trade for the HRDvl.

Given those options I'd choose the TRRI.

As the owner of two of these 100-watt behemoths and someone who gigs regularly, I find increasingly fewer venues for which a Twin Reverb is appropriate or even desired.

+1 I gigged with my 76 100 watt TR for over 30 years. Until I finally sold it. I'd go DRRI or one of Egnater's offerings. Had a HRDlx and it wasn't anything special.

I have the Twin Reverb Reissue and replaced the stock speakers with Jensen Neo's. Still breaking them in, but they sound pretty good. So it's an 85-watt amp with authentic Fender tone that weighs about 53 pounds. I use it everywhere, including home practice, and just size the room with the guitar volume knob.

Also have the DRRI and that's a great amp too.

Best of luck.

I played the Egnaters today...couldn't get excited about them. The clean channel is just ok, and the drive channels weren't much to get excited about either. I loved everything about the amp, except for how it sounded!!

Did you compare them to a HRD like your own? Where you using your own guitar and your own FX?

Seriously. You need to spend some time with them. They're not something you can just walk up to, plug in and play. I've been playing for over 40 years and find Egnater amps a breath of fresh air. Most professionals who try my rig want to take it home. LOL Which models did you play? Just curious. They all get rave reviews for the most part. I dumped my HRDlx because it was an unreliable POS and a one trick pony to boot. The clean channel wasn't all that clean either. My Twin on the other hand...........

We all have different ears and tastes.

You said you use pedals for your OD/dist. If you are thinking about the DRRI take your pedals with you to test it, because none of my OD/Dist pedals sound good at all through the DRRI.

Yep, That happens with all amplifiers. Not all pedals sound good with all amps. I build most of my pedals and mod them if I need to. You should always try amps out with your own guitar and effects if you can.

I have owned a twin reverb... loved the sound, hated the heat it put out in the summer time, and hated the weight....

I now own 2 DRRI's believe it or not at 22 watts, they are more than loud enough... I play in a 16 piece jazz big band...

for $600, if the DRRI is in good shape, no issues, is a smoking deal...
