Now, all that you need is a catchy name for your amp mod/building services and you're set.

Cool none-the-less. 8)

These mods seem fantastic for such a cool little amp. Too complicated for me personally so I'm rationalizing how great it sounds stock. My main complaint is the mushy grill cloth and I'm pretty sure I can handle modding that. Great work on the mods... Man!!!

Hello,
I began with a problem that my blues Jr. american made, didn't sound good at the volume I want to play it at. That and a chance encounter with a good priced new Fender Champion 600 has changed my direction. I have seen that there is a lot of modifications available and discussed in this thread as well as on Youtube on the Champion. My specific desire now is to run a 12" Cannabis Rex I now have installed in my Fender Blues Jr. Hopefully get that tried out today. I want to increase the quality of the sound gradually. I mainly run humbucker but would like the ability to run fender type single coils also with great quality sound, is this too much to ask? Since reading this thread, it seems as if the member bluesky636 has tailored the amp to produce the quality and keep the amp at it's optimal running values. I really don't understand the amps working very well but am fairly handy with a soldering iron and stuff. I would also like to be able to run the combo with a new speaker with great quality, is this too much to hope for? Being used to tone controls and a variable gain, would also be nice. What are the chances??
I must say a bit of this is just the tinkering bug. A seeming favorite is to change the configuration to match a 57 Tweed Champ. I am mainly looking for quality sound. If it works out, I will get a cabinet for the Cannabis and replace the stock to the Blues Jr.
I really don't know which direction to start off in. So any opinions and information is greatly appreciated. The adventure begins.....
Regards,
Glenn

I don't know what direction you want to start off in either. I did a lot of analysis and experimenting with components to come up with the configuration and sound that I did. You can try following what I did. If you have specific questions, I will be glad to answer them but right now your goals are too vague to try and address.

Hello bluesky636,
Thank you for your response. Vague is being kind. I heard a Vox lil night train through a marshall 4X12 cabinet. That came very close to producing all the tonality of the guitar at very low volume. Someone bought the used one before I decided. I don't mind getting a used 4X12 and installing new speakers over time if necessary. I am basically looking for very quality sound at low volume. The Blues Jr sounds great loud, but at the volume I have to play at, it is muddy. I don't want to go to a digital amp. So with Attenuators, post phase inverters or variable voltage regulation which to some degree compromise the tone for the decreased volume. I have searched around and had heard good thing about the Champion an purchased it at a good price. Changing tubes would be a good starting question, are the ones mentioned in the thread the ones you still recommend? I can't mod it because I still am able to return it if it won't solve my volume/sound problem. Do you think it is a good enough amp to try to attain the solution I seek, possibly?
Appreciate your time.
Glenn

I used a couple of different preamp tubes during my experiments. You need to be more specific.

The amp suits my purposes. I have no idea if it will suit yours. That is for you to decide.

I made the final tweeks to my heavily modded C600 and it now works and sounds fantastic when using either the 6" Jensen Mod speaker or the cab with the 12" Celestion.

I finally settled on two 0.0033 mFd caps as the coupling caps (vice the 5F1 values of 0.022 mFd), and a bright cap on the low gain input of 0.01 mFd. The 0.0033 mFd coupling caps give a -3dB point for the low end of about 50 Hz vs the stock 0.022 mFd -3dB point of 7 Hz (What was Leo thinking? A 7 Hz low end with a 6"speaker?  ). The bright cap of 0.01 mFd starts rolling the low end off at about 560 Hz making the 82 Hz 6th string down by about 12 - 15 dB from 1000 Hz.

The net result is a good solid bass with either a humbucker or single coil using either the 6"speaker or 12" speaker. When using the 6" speaker a humbucker or single coil guitar can be plugged into the high level input (the natural rolloff of the little speaker helps to clean up the bottom end which is now better controlled with a 50 Ha rolloff). When using the 12" cab, a humbucker plugs into the revoiced low gain input while a single coil plugs into the high gain input. Sounds great. I will try and make a few recordings of the various configurations this weekend.

Just increased the two 0.0033 mfd coupling caps to 0.0047 mfd. Drops the -3 dB point of the amp from about 50 Hz to about 35 Hz. Not much of a change, but enough to be noticable with a little bit more punch in the bass with both the 6" speaker and the 12" cab.

This truely is my last mod to the little beastie as the PCB is beginning to look like WW III was fought on it.

Yes, if you mean the last mod that you made....before the next mod.

I knew you couldn't stop!

And I wouldn't want you to either.

glennc717,

Use an external speaker cab with your C600 and/or BJr, as they both have speaker jacks. You might be pleasantly surprised with what each can do.

Yeah, I know.

I'm thinking about gutting it and squeezing in a 59 Bassman circuit. Single channel, two 5881s. I'll have to remove the stock speaker to make room for the choke, PT, and OT. Not sure where I will mount all the pots and knobs. Thinking maybe dual pots for Bass/Mid and Treble/Presence. Gonna have to install a low noise fan to cool all the tubes. I'll post pictures.

JUST KIDDING!

Now I remember why I bought the Pro JR instead of the Champ 600. No Mods Required.

Why don't you do something useful like start your own thread about how wonderful your Pro Jr is and butt out of mine. I'm sure everyone will find it fascinating.
