i was talking to a friend who is looking for a new speaker for his combo amp. it is a peavey valveking 112 with a 16 ohm speaker, and he's looking to upgrade.

this amp has an adjustable 4-8-16 ohm switch. there are companies that make the same speaker in different ohm ratings. the celestion vintage 30 comes to mind.

would there be any difference in sound between an 8 ohm and 16 ohm speaker such as the example above? of course, i am talking about the switch being in the proper position for each load.

thanks for helping me expand my knowledge

I know folks who allegedly can discern a sonic difference between two otherwise identical speakers that differ only in the impedance of their voice coils.

Frankly, I remain unconvinced.

More winding you use from the output transformer better the sound.
A transformer witch have 16 , 8 ,4 ohms tap will have a better sound if you use the 16 ohms tap. At 8 ohms you use only half of the transformer winding and at 4 ohms the quarter....

Would you ear the difference ? But you won't make a mistake if you use the best. If you cut in quality a little bit here and couple monts later a little bit there......you'll finish with a poor tone.

I agree though that the difference might be subtle, the way that the speaker responds. The amp may be designed to work best at 16 ohms.

Are you sure that the VK112 has an impedance selector? The head and 212 have the switch, but not the 112. The 112 has the "Texture" adjustment, and using the external jack in the 112 disconnects the internal speaker. :?:
