Simple question... which of these amps is a better gigging amp for classic rock-type music? I will get my dirt from pedals, so will only be using the clean channel on the HRD.

If the HRD crashes and burns due to crappy solder joints or thermal damage to the uber-thin traces on the PCB you won't be using any channel.

I'll take that as a vote for the DRRI.

A most astute analysis, sir.

(and for the record, I've owned both)

For somewhere close to the same kinda cash as a new DRRI you could prolly find a early to mid 70's Silver Face and have a good amp. Barring that option I'd vote with Arjay on the DRRI.

+1

Beaubs recently picked up a real clean '80 DR for a righteous price.

I have a guy willing to sell me his like new DRRI for $600. I'm not sure I want to spend what a new one costs right now. $600 felt like a good price on a nice amp.

+1 Or the 5 watt resistors give yo the ghost and it channel switches whenever it feels like it. I can't vouch for the III but my HRDlx was a total POS and I was glad when I sold it. Mine let me down three times on stage until I retired it from gigging. Get the DRRI.

If you have electronic skills and solder iron in your flycase, HRD is an option. Seriously, I've a BDLx without issues excepted when I bough it 1 years ago and half (the loudspeaker and 1 valve were defective), but I'm not making a lot of gigs.
Again DR is sure a reference, may be Shimmilou can share his experience with HRD.
:) :) :)

Is the DRRI loud enough to gig with, or will it need to be mic'd?

The DRRI is louder than its 22 watts would lead one to believe. I've used mine both with and without miking through a PA, depending upon the size of the venue. For a small-to-medium sized saloon or club though, it should do fine on its own.

Anymore, if I can't gig with 20-25 watts, it's too friggin loud. Been there done that and damaged my hearing. I gigged with a 100 watt Twin for over 30 years. Used Sunn Scepters with two 4x12 cabs too as well as multiple amps daisy chained for outdoor gigs like festivals. The DRRI is the perfect gigging amp for most small the medium clubs and just mic it for larger venues. Always remember to keep your stage volume under control and let the sound man take care of the rest at larger venues.
