I'm trying to find more information on this cabinet I bought second hand. Through help from this forum I've gleaned a little, and thanks to my multimeter I can now run it safely, but I know very few details about this cab and I still don't know the wattage of the speakers for sure.

I'd also be very interested in getting a second one to run with mine if anyone has one!

It's a guitar cab, supposedly a speaker cabinet for the "Red Knob" Dual showman from '87 to '93.

The only details I know are this, and the speakers are PROBABLY Eminence designed, and the speakers are 8ohms.

Yes, Red Knob era Showmans were available with this cab. They were known as the "wedge" cabinets.

Fender got back to me today with all the speaker details!

I was correct about the ohmage, although they said that each speaker was 100 watts, but the cab was only 200 watts RMS in series/parallel, which doesn't make sense to me.

If you have a grasp of Ohm's Law and how it relates to power drop, it will.

Could you give me a simpler, layman explanation please?

Series-parallel means that the 4 drivers are divided into 2 groups of 2. The two groups are paired wired in series and then the 2 pairs are combined wired together in parallel. This is the wiring method they use in order to allow a 412 cab with (4) 8 ohm speakers to have a final rating of 8 ohms.

The forumla used to make these calculations can be found here:

Regardless of the wiring, even in series/parallel, four 100 watt speakers will handle 400 watts if the impedance is optimized. But those power ratings are really a pretty crude guideline, and in reality the impedance match is often poor. In partiular, sometimes the parallel connection portion may be disregarded in a mfgr's rating if they assume the impedance of the amp will not be changed accordingly, like for a transistorized amp or any with only one impedance output in which case the amp puts out twice as much current and their rule-of-thumb rating will only double in accordance with the series connection in an attempt to keep you out of trouble. When the ratings are made for dummies, they are less useful for the knowedgeable. Now which to believe, that the speakers really handle 100 watts or that the cabinet really only handles 200? Having seen the speakers, I would only put less than 200 into the cabinet personally.

The Showman heads that came with these were 4 6L6 powered and rated 105 watts, how much more power you plan on putting through this? Unless you plan to use for bass and are going to use a 300 watt head, you should be good to go.

Bit of necromancy going on here I think, this thread is like a year old!

Replaced the speakers with Swamp Thangs and going to put in some Wizards too, paired up with an Orange OTR120.

Now let the thread diiiie.

It doesn't matter how the speakers are connected, whether series/parallel, series, or parallel, if each speaker is 100 watts RMS, then four speakers in one cab can handle 400 watts RMS. If all speakers are the same impedance, each will receive an equal share of the wattage, regardless of configuration.
