Hey there everyone!

I am about to get back into home recording as my work schedule is easing-up a bit. I used to go from guitar to POD to computer, but now I have my lovely SuperSonic combo... So my question is: should I mic w/ an SM57 (straight-on or off-axis?) or should I use my Oktava MK-319 set back a bit from the speaker, capturing some of the room as well as the amp sound?"

Much of what I play is quite bluesy; but other times I get into heavily effected abrasive, metallic tones. I would appreciate any help from you more experienced players.

Thanks!

Super-Sonic amps ARE lovely! Haha

I've found good results with an SM-57 or other dynamic mic placed close to the outer edge of the speaker cone, and a condenser mic a few feet away. A cool thing to do is play the amp while you walk around the room; if you find a spot in the room that sounds good to your ear, put the condenser there!

There's no substitute for experimentation, though...try lots of different placements 'til you find something you like.

Enjoy your Super-Sonic!

Shane

Definitely ditch the digital recording you dont capture the real sound at all...i've used some AKG dynamic mics that captured it pretty well...just remember when ur recording into the amp the closer it is the more bass you'll get and like the previous post i should be level with the speakers horizontal axis and somewhere between the center cone and the outer i believe its supposed to be a couple inches or so from the edge...hope this helped!

Dude if it were me I wouldn't even give the 57 a try unless you have a great preamp for it. Use the condensor and you will get much better results. The only dynamic I have used that works well is the Sennhieser e906
