Hello there,

I am using now the 3rd Frontman 15R amplifier within the last half year - the first two died probably for the same reason. Most likely the cause is in the connection between my laptop and the amp because the failure always occured when this connection was on.

Very interestingly, however, the breakdown never happened immediately. I could use them for hours also along with the connection between the amp and the PC.

I read that the RCA connector has the disadvantage that the hot wire come into contact earler then the cold contact endangering the connected equipment when it is switched on in the meantime. Can this damage the Frontman amp so much that it fully dies? I could not even switch them on any more!

Is the length of the connecting cable relevant here?

In order to establish the connection I have to use an adaptor cable, as well, since the PC's sound card (Realtek High Definition Audio) has a mini jack input. Can the adapter and the RCA cable have compatibility problems?

I use a 3 m long Cordial silver RCA cable and a 1.5 m long Hama adapter cable.

I had both of them checked electrically and they proved to be all right.

I can hardly imagine that a laptop with an average sound card can ruin a guitar amp. The amp should be the stronger, shouldn't it?

Your opinion is appretiated.

Regards,
Rudolf

Your amp died after connected your PC to RCA input !!!!!

Only these input died or all the amp died and you can't even play guitar on it ?

Cable lengt is not a problem.

This amp seems very cheap, but I must admit I did not read instruction how to use the RCA input.
And you buy a third one ! I wish you'll think about not buying a fourth :)

So, i must not connect the amp to the PC?

Yes, the amp died so much that I could not play guitar on it.

Interestingly, the user manual does not touch this problem at all. Also elsewhere, nothing is said. According to descriptions I have found, everything should work fine but it is unclear if PC's (laptops) can be connected or not.

Fortunately, Fender replaced both amps without any further, so I haven't lost money, so far. Only time.

In the morning I found the following link:

http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/squawk-box/67294-fender-frontman-15r-blown.html

It also contains a further link to a relevant Fender Forum discussion.

I have the very same problem.

A solution seems to have been found there. If I understand it well, an IC is mistakenly soldered, such that very huge current may go through it. Changing the soldering of the legs to the correct one, the problem cease to exist. Even a very fine sound can be obtained.

Unfortunately, a musician is not necessarily a skilled electrician and is not always equipped well with the right tools. So, for many of us this type of curing the problem is almost unrealizable.

On the other hand, the failure seems to originate from a design failure. Or only in some of the amps the legs of this IC are soldered in an incorrect order? Hard to imagine.

The two discussions I mentioned above are dated in 2009. Consequently, this problem has been existing for at least 2 years.

I do not understand Fender's attitude. This problem belongs to cheapness? (Otherwise, Frontmans are not that cheap.) To correctly design and make the soldering of an IC?

Fender simply changes the amps without any comment, and the users do not understand what is going on. And they cannot use their amp. Only for a while...
