I have a very simply question for which I'd like to get an official answer.

When powering up my amp, which switch goes on first - the standby or the power switch? (There is a lot of conflicting information across the web).

Power switch ON first ; this bring fillement voltage to heat the tubes.

After Standby switch to PLAY mode.

Tubes need to be warm before applying high voltage.

Power switch heat the tubes and Standby apply hi voltage. A cold tube receiving high voltage see is plate loosing some material and last shorter. Also it could blow in the worst case.

Amplifier with tube rectifier like 5AR4/ GZ34 have a slow start , not "really need" Standby switch. Amps with 5U4 or silicon rectfier are "fast start" a standby switch is very useful, ( a must IMO )

I got this response from Fender Consumer Relations....

"Both the Standby and Power go on at the same time. Let the tubes heat up for a couple minutes,…turn the Standby off,…and rock!"

What Stratele said...

Turn Power on, let it warm up then switch Standby on. Do the same when turning the amp off, but in reverse, standby off, let tubes cool down then power off. Your tubes will thank you :)

Both standby and power go on in the same time !!!!

What I could read "electronicaly speaking "; Standby on could mean the switch IN standby mode ; no high voltage; OK
Power on ; fillement heated ; OK

....turn standby off ; this could mean , put the switch in the " no" standby position; put in the "play " position ; OK

But I must admitt Fender Consumer relation have strange vocabulary to help consummer

What are you confused about? It's a very simple procedure...

Turn Power on ONLY
Let it warm up for a couple mins
Then switch Standby on
That's it!

Do the same when turning the amp off, but in reverse, standby off, let tubes cool down then power off.

+1

Five to ten minutes of cool-down time will be sufficient.

And , as possible, don't move the amp util the tubes are cold.

cedarblue, I'm not sure we need to "cool down" the amp before power off.

Moi Je préfère "cool down" :)

You just said not to move the amp til the tubes are cold, which is why I always put it in standby for a few mins to let it cool, then off for a few more before packing up for the nite... maybe it's an old habit, been doing it for 20+ years, kinda late to change now

OK let's try this. Turn on the the power switch, but leave the standby switch in the down position, "standby", which leaves the standby engaged. Let the tubes warm up for a few minutes. Then put the standby switch to the "on" position which disengages the standby, in effect, turning off the standby. Does that help? :) As far as turning the amp off, it's debatable what's best. I've been turning the power off first just because I don't like that nasty poping sound I get from the standby switch. But always be sure to re-engage the standby before powering up again.
