Hello,

I have an HRD 212, recently just noticed a very disturbing rattle coming from one of the power tubes. I know there are dampeners for this but I have a show tomorrow and I was wondering if there is a make shift solution for this problem untill I can get some ordered. Maybe an auto parts store? Has anyone ever purchased anything locally? Thanks for any help.

Shucky

Hi shucky,

How can you be sure that it is a tube? You can use an oven mit or similar to grasp the tube and see if the noise stops.

You might also make sure that something close to the amp isn't the source of the noise, as sometimes furniture, or walls, or pictures, or other things near the amp can seem like amp noise. Also, sometimes noise can be caused by a loose part in the amp, so make sure all of the screws are tight. Even remove the back panel to see if some wires might be close to the panel causing a noise, as this happens also. Don't touch anything in the amp, lethal voltages there, but simply remove the panel and try the amp.

It could simply be a tube, but these are other possibilities that can be checked. High-temperature silicon o-rings from the hardware store would work at least on a temporary basis until you can order some tube dampers.

There are plenty of types of the silicon rings on eBay, these are the ones that I use, great rings and a reputable seller, I have bought several sets from him.

Thanks,

Yes, it's my left power tube I can grab it and the noise stops. And it's only on certain notes, just hit the right pitch and it goes bonkers.

OK, sounds like you are on top of it, carry on. 8)

Measure the diameter of your tubes, (approx 36 mm) and check your local hardware store, they should have something that works at least temporarily. You want rings that are slightly smaller than the diameter of the tube.

Better to replace tubes, it have mechanical problem inside and if you don't want it stop to work on middle of a gig.
