You know some of us aren't as good as Derek Trucks and SRV...but some of us have played with rather well known folks, you don't have to be famous to work on tone,I've jammed with Warren Haynes way back when...and yeah,he was damn good even then when he was with David Allen Coe,and some bass playing guy named Allen Woody played my Les Paul,he later got with Warren and formed Gov't Mule :D ...seriously,here in Nashville you run into some cool people, they don't dismiss someone's ideas on tone as being worthless because they don't make $500,000 a year....and yep,I've also met Derek Trucks....but me I'm an unknown guitarist.
But yeh,if you're worried about warranties...leave it alone.

Here is what I am trying to say. There are musicians who earn upwards of $500,000 per year using stock amps. I just read an article about Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi talking about using thier stock Fender Super Reverb Reissues. Since I don't believe most of us on this forum are at the same level as a Derek Trucks, Robert Cray or Stevie Ray Vaughn I don't believe that modding a DRRI is something we have to do. It is fine if you wish to make changes to your amp but I think it is bad advise to tell someone who just purchased an amp the they have to do the Fritz or any other mod thus voiding thier warranty. The amp sounds great as is. The mods may give it a slight improvement but they are not required.

AFAIK Derek plays a '65 and a '68 SR, not reissues...
Cray uses Matchless, and I believe SR in the past...
SRV used SR, VV, Dumble, Marshall...

Why did I bother mentioning this? Cause these amps are not reissue amps mass produced with lower quality parts. So it's ok to mod a new amp if you can't afford a vintage or boutique amp to get closer to that tone you seek or only found in these amp... just my opinion of course, I'm not gonna force anyone to do anything with their amp

I must say I'd like to try a Celestion Gold in mine.

I have a Jensen alnico P12n in my tweed limited edition HRDX. It sounds great and I had the solder joints redone and a new reverb tank installed along with two new real nice power tubes shortly after I got it - all covered under the warranty.

I think the alnico speaker "could" sound real good, but it all depends upon what you are looking for. Some like the Eminence Red, White, and Blues, others the Webers, and others a lower sensitivity speaker that breaks up earlier, imparting that nice overdrive at lower volume for at home playing.

Okay everybody, let's just stop and take a deep breath...

I didn't mean to turn this into a Modded vs. Unmodded war. I just like my DRRI unmodded and wanted to communicate that...end of. And I respect all of you who have modded your DRRI's.

We're all a part of the DRRI community. So let's just appreciate the DRRI for what it is...a great amp.

+1 Blind Gilbo.
Since my comments are right in the middle of this I would like to add my final comments.
First, I am sure there are many great musicians on this thread and I did not mean to indicate that any of you were not good because you were not famous. I know many good guitar players that are not famous and don't make a lot of money. If I offended anuone I apologize.
Next I understand the idea of wanting to mod the DRRI. There are some who may want to add a bright switch, others may want to add a mid tone control while others may want to add reverb to the main channel. I would probably want to do some of these my self. But FOR ME to do this to a brand new amp and risk voiding the warranty may be a high price to pay. On the other hand if you buy the amp used then go for it.
Finally I am close to bying the DRRI but I am also considering a Tube Tone amp. Do you think the tube tone amp might be a better option. Here is a link to thier site. Thier amps are hand wired and offer all kinds of options. Here is a link to the site

"and RoHC compliant (lead free) silver solder."

Absolute deal-breaker for me.

I'm going to leave mine fairly stock, but I might put in a real good speaker, because I think the right real good speaker can make a big difference. Sometimes you can get some great input as to which speaker to put in from listening to these guys and making an informed decision. The stock speaker sounds pretty good.

But I am not about to completely discount the idea of making some changes, it's not like I'm rigid or anything. It is my amp and if I want to do some changes that are reversible in the event that it needs warranty service, I'll do it. Plus, changing tubes of the recommended values is not going to void the warranty, and a simple tube change of a preamp tube to a different manufacturer can make a big difference in tone. I did that with my 6505+ combo and put an electro harmonix in V1 after the stock one proceeded to very quickly go microphonic and the EH sounds real good, quiet, and really produces a great tone thru the high gain circuit.

I'm cool with leaving it as is, but if you listen to some of these pro's they will turn you on to some tips that they learned over the years that usually carry a lot of value. Then again you will hear a lot of bovine biological waste material.
