I think the 12AY7's "mu" factor may be too low but a 12AT7 might provide a happy medium.

Not sure what amp the OP has, but I found a 12AT7 in V1 of my BDRI to be too sterile sounding. A 5751 was a better choice.

I think he has the "Twin Amp", Bill (the blackface-style, pro-tube model).

You might be right about the 5751. But all the possibilities are easy enough to try out -- and discard if they don't perform as desired.

That's the neat thing about tube amps. Can you imagine trying to change transisters to achieve a different sound? Let's not even talk about "modeling" amps.

Well in the old days of discrete components, it was pretty easy to change out a TO3- or a TO66-cased transistor. Today, with IC chips?

PFFFFFFFFFT!

I'd rather go to the dentist for a double root canal than wade into one of those modeling turkeys.

Another good choice is the Sovtek 5751. Try to buy it from someone that supplies hi-fi ppl with phono stages or Pros that use mike pre-amps. They ferret out the quietest of the bunch.

Really has good headroom. Clean to at least 2 "notches" above the OEM 12AX7. With a silkyer OD. Not the super crunch of a 12AX7. You may need to juggle the positions of the OEM 12AX7 and 5751 to get the best tone. I like them in input stage for "too hot" amps. really tames them, like a good 12AY7. Just a thought:

Here's a nice short blurb on the various 12A(_)7 type (and there derivatives). And basic tonal effect:

My recommendation:

http://thetubestore.com/sylvania5751.html

A few dollars more but possibly built a little better.
