I recently purchased a Frontman 212R off of Ebay and received it yesterday. What I noticed is the speaker magnets do not contain the typical fender logo and appear to have different wiring that the 212R's I have seen at retail shops. I don't know when the amp was made, but is in really good shape suggesting it can't be more than a few years old at most.

I am trying to determine if the seller sold me the amp without telling me he replaced the speakers. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is my first decent amp purchase after years of playing with a Crate practice amp. I was/am really excited about the amp, but this definitely concerns me. Thanks!!!

The photos in the auction listing clearly show speakers with no decal on them. The auction listing says:

Speaker: 2-12" 8 ohm, 50 watt Speakers Miscellaneous

Here is the amp from Sweetwater:

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/FM212R/

You should have asked about it then, not after taking delivery.

You paid $200 for what appears to be a nearly new amp that normally sells for $300. How does it sound? If you are happy with the sound, what is the problem?

No sniveling.

After all, you did get a free fuzzbox.

Thank you for your responses. I am happy with the sound of the amp, but truthfully don't know enough to determine if replacement speakers (which these appear to be) hinder the sound Fender intended with their own speakers.

I guess my question is, do speakers really play a significant role in the overall tone and sound or does the amp handle all of this? Sorry for the stupid questions, but I am just a hobbiest and want to make sure I didn't screw up by not asking more questions prior to the purchase.

Thanks!

That's all that matters. Quit obsessing about it.

+1

It's impossible to determine what speakers are installed in your amp from the Ebay photos but rest assured, there is nothing remarkable about those chicom-made green-label OEM drivers that normally come with the FM212R. Likely, you've got an upgrade.

The seller responded with the following:

Thank you for the follow up! The 2x12s are not the original speakers. I have never cared for the Low Pass sound of the Fender Stocks. You notice the Eminence/technics have a way better crunch for metal and punk. I cannot tell the difference between the two while playing Clean, so I prefer the Eminence/technics. Let me know your thoughts!

I requested the make and model information to ensure I can match the speakers in case I blow one, but have not yet received a response.

I tried to do some research regarding the Eminence/Technics, but they appear to be completely different speaker companies. This is confusing and frustrating in that it appears he doesn't know which brand is being used.

At the end of the day, I love the amp and the sound as I am simply a novice. But, part of me feels like it should have been mentioned. Also, the make/model information should be provided in the eventuality I have to replace and match a speaker.

The replaced speakers should have been mentioned prior to the sale.

That said, if some calamity occurs, most competent speaker servicing companies can easily determine the brand and type should repairs ever become necessary. Unless they happen to be something really obscure, they'll have access to the correct parts to perform a full reconditioning procedure -- parts are still made for many speakers that date to the '50s and even older.

If there are any numbers visible on the frames and/or the magnet structures, they'll likely indicate who made the speakers and when. Eminence speakers are usually marked with a set of numerals prefixed by a "67".

Best of luck, HTH
