For Jazz it is depending of the guitar and the style. How I made now to find the sound is to adjust first bass and medium in order to have the right back sound for rythm guitar and find sound brightness with treble ( for rythm the presence is almost at 0, for lead it is up to you). But it is really depending of the band composition (trumpet, cuivres ...) and what you are playing in the band. I use a Epi Casino equipped with flat string, sometimes my tele position 1 (huge low pass filter in 52 model).
For rock, the HR is "the" sound, just play.

In this older version of the manual (link below), there are some amp setting suggestions for different sounds. Note that you can use either the foot pedal or the panel switches for channel selections indicated in the manual.
