Hi, I just bought a new Blues Jr. NOS yesterday and love the amp. It's good to have the Fender sound in a smaller package that I can actually tote around without back pain. The only question I have has to do with the reverb. I was wanting to 'tame' it down a little bit because when I turn the reverb knob to three, it's too much. Is the reverb driven by one of the 12ax7 tubes? If so, would it tame the reverb without harming the amp if I put in a 12at7 instead?

Thanks!

A far more knowledgable person may contradict me here, but I don't think it's that simple.

The reverb circuit is very basic and isn't specifically valve powered - only in as much as the amp is valve powered. So I can't see that changing a valve will help you.

I agree that it can get pretty lively, especially as you increase the (master) volume. I've had the reverb control down to as low as 1.5 when I've been working the amp harder than I usually do. Infact, if I'm using the amp for clean sounds, I now turn the reverb down to zero, and use a digital Boss/Fender spring reverb pedal instead. It's a much better and clearer sound.

If the amp just had an effects loop, I'd use a reverb pedal for overdriven sounds too.

Sorry no, none of the tubes in the BJ are related to the reverb circuit.
It's reverb tank is all solid state drive.

The 12ax7 tubes are all part of the pre-amp gain stages.

Correct adey, the reverb in the BJr is op-amp driven and recovered, not tube.

Hi StratLover61',

If 3 is too much, turn it down to 2-1/2. It makes no difference what the knob indicates, just turn it to the desired listening level. I usually run mine at about 2-1/2 to 3, sounds great.

If you need finer adjustment on the low end of adjustment range, one thing that you might consider, is to change the reverb pot to an audio taper. On the Billm site (link below), scroll down to "Audio-taper master volume control". The existing pot is a 50K ohm, linear taper pot. The new 50K ohm audio taper pot can be used to replace the master vol, or reverb pot (same value for both pots in the amp).

Of course modification to the amp, "no matter how slight", will void the warranty.

The tapered audio pot makes the reverb come on more slowly as you turn up. I had Billm put one in my BJ when he did mods for me.

Yeah, replacing the pot is the way to go. Its super easy.
Most of the other BillM mods are quite easy as well.
