Let's see...the date on my Pignose purchase receipt is January 1995. While browsing through my papers I found a photo of a band mate of mine playing his late 50's Gretsch Duo Jet which he acquired in high school. The MSRP was $255 back then. That's the same guitar model made famous by George Harrison and Cliff Gallup...Jeff Beck's major influence.
Roger still owns that guitar, 50+ years later. All of us started off small, we played and paid our dues. The gear went from Danelectro short horn guitars and their Centurion amps of that vintage, to Fender Concert and Showman Amps, to Stratocaster and Jaguar guitars, P-Bass, and a Gretsch Tennessean. The prices we paid back then were just as dear as those faced with these days because that equipment was top of the line back then. We were justified in our expenses because they were journeyman gear we were paying for with income. Somewhere along the line you can make it happen. Just prioritize. Put away a little every week.

Always fun to review prices. First amp was a Gemini II for $275 new. My mint 1 year old '65 Twin also cost me $275 a few months later (Gemini too quiet). My Hagstrom II was $99 new with case. A year later my Epi Windsor was $199 new with hardshell. Of course, gas was $.28 a gallon and minimum wage was $1.25.

The problem I have with these, and other high dollar gear is that most places don't have any to check out. Its a lot of money to spend on a leap of faith, and since these amps are only sold through premium dealerships I'm a little hesitant. Still I feel the gas pains urging me on.

I unduly believe that these amps are quite pricy...
In particular, the one 5watt amp costs about 1000$ .
I know it has Vintage sound and it sounds great but it's only 5 watts!!!

Oh mine's is a lot more recent i just got it in the last couple of years, i don't use it much but still it's quite cool for what it is. Had to laugh though do you know you can get that little Pignose amp finished in tweed now? well you guys in the states can, i've never seen anywhere here in the UK that stocks them. Can you believe that?

Yeah you're right, good quality gear has always been expensive. You want the best you have to pay, simple as that really. I remember when i bought my first strat, i had to take it out on HP and pay it up in instalments!

When the blues bands like Muddy's and Buddy & Junior and James Cotton came into town from Chicago, you could always tell the ones that were doing better: the real struggling dudes had all this weird-ass pawn shop stuff: Kent guitars and basses, Eko, Silvertone, Supro, crazy-name amps with blue-and-green electrical tape all over em that spent half their lives in pawn shops.

But Muddy started doing better and Hubert and everybody started showing up with piggyback Bandmasters and Muddy got himself a Super and stuff. Dudes had Fender, they was livin' large, brothuh. It was top of the line in '63 or so.

If Eric used a Pignose during DATD was it a pre-production version? I thought the production version wasn't available until 1973

He was given a prototype by the maker Lefty, so were Jimmy Page, The Eagles, Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who and probably more than those one's.

Clapton post-Cream = DULL.

Just my 2 cents.

I like a lot of Eric's stuff, after all that's why i bought a Clapton strat, but he's played the same way now for years and when you compare him to Jeff Beck, who seems to constantly reinvent himself, then his playing can seem a bit dull.

So i agree with your point to a certain extent, but he remains a massive influence on me, massive.

Agreed, specially on choosing bassists

The Ronnie Scott's JB vs. Clapton encounter was a bit embarrassing. Jeff has never stopped pushing the envelope, and Eric has never stopped opening his royalty envelopes. Therein lies the rub.

LOL! yeah i totally agree and i'm a Clapton fan. To me, and this is just my opinion, Eric's playing seems tired and a little jaded these days whereas Jeff is out of this world still and as you rightly say pushing the envelope.

Jeff's playing on the Ronnie Scott concert, and in general, is like a scalpel goin' straight into your soul! songs like Angel Footsteps, Nadia, A Day In The Life, rarely, if ever, have i heard this much emotion and expression coming out of a guitar. Truly this guy is in a league of his own, i was just blown away by Beck in this concert. I love how he uses the trem bar melodically.

I was heavily into Jeff's playing years ago when i had his albums on vinyl but since those days never got around to replacing those old albums with CD's.

Having had the pleasure of opening for both of them and gotten to know them a little, I can say they're both nice guys and worth rooting for in their careers. Can't say that about everybody in the biz.

I have every studio album EC (solo & bands) has ever released plus hundreds of bootlegs, and the one period I hardly ever seem to go to is 60's Cream. I like a lot of the studio albums but the live stuff I struggle to listen to.

To me his Mayall period was better, DATD was better, and his live playing throughout the 90's was better. And the 2005 Cream reunion was better.

I actually think his 90's live playing was his peak, and 28/Nov/1994 was his finest live performance ever.
