I want one of these amps! i bet they sound glorious.

I should never have joined this forum! every time i look at threads it makes me want the stuff more and more!

Interesting the evolution of technology and the price difference, on the booklet that accompanies the "Layla Anniversary CD's" engineer Tom Dowd recalls Eric playing and recording with a little Pignose! Contrast that with the announcement of the new amps!

That's like no-tech to hi-tech in one small swoop!

I picked up a Twinolux today from Sweetwater. It is the warmest Fender amp I own with my Revera Twin Reverb in second. I plugged in my Daphne Blue EC CS strat and it just sounds great. Immediately I had the feeling that I had found the elusive warm sweet spot I have looked for for years. A buddy and I have been taking turns on it all afternoon. He's playing as I type.. The built in attenuator is a huge plus to really hear this amp perform at room volumes.

The tone just melts you in a relaxing way.

Get one, you will be glad you did.

Gorgon: It's called G.A.S....gear acquisition syndrome. Welcome to the club. As to the Layla sessions....it has also been said that a Fender Champ played a major role in that undertaking. Enjoy your amp. Hope you got a good deal. Not as good a Vince Gil's though, I'm sure.
Thanks for the feedback. This is the kind thing which sold the Gilmours, the Mayers, and the Clapton LTD's.

Yeah I think maybe you're confusing the Layla sessions with some other Clapton session, possibly "Motherless Children" from 461 Ocean Blvd. Eric and Duane used Fender Champ and maybe Princeton amps on the Layla sessions. I've read though in a couple different places that Clapton used a Pignose amp for the slide part on "Motherless Children".

Nah! i'm not confusing those sessions. It specifically says that Dowd said Eric was using a Pignose and a fender champ and Dowd walked in while Eric was jamming with Duane Allman, one was playing the champ the other the pignose. He used a pignose for recording Layla not just for fooling around and warming up or what have you, you can hear it in the tone, in a lot of places he has that rough ragged pignose sound.

In another interview Dowd said, "Eric carried in his own Deluxe for that session (Layla)." And later, "There were various small amps around the room, I don't think we'll ever know for sure who was playing what."

I believe it.

At the risk of sounding very ignorant I am going to ask the question... what is a pignose amp? It sounds like a tele neck which is the only pignose I know (and dispise as I am tryring to build a Blind Faith Tele with the custom shop and getting nowhere) No pignose necks in my guitar collection right now.

The guitar seen in the celebrated free concert Blind Faith did is a Tele body with a Strat neck. This, according to both credits and visuals is the '56 SB Stratocaster known as Brownie which Paul Allen purchased at the first Crossroads auction paying $450K+ for the guitar. The guitar is now housed in the EMP museum in Seattle.

Pignoses sounded kinda cool by themselves through that tiny speaker but the right thing to do for studio work was to have a line out installed as I did and run that straight into the board. It gave you real full ripping chords and Marshally leads that way, and surprisingly quiet too when you ran it straight off batteries. Using the power supply added a bit of hum.

Yeah i think you're right on the button there Musicmaster, i think some people used it as a slave amp as well running it into a bigger amp. Mine is a newer one, they say the older one's sounded better. I would never have bought one until i read about Eric playing through it on the Layla sessions, as soon as i read that i had to try one!

Let's face it it's never gonna sound like a high quality tweed fender but it's a pretty cool little amp for what it does.

Just reading anndria4ever's quote before i post this; i echo your thoughts, i just wish these products were more within the reach of ordinary mortals. It's the way of the world nowadays though with every kind of product; you want super high quality and build then you have to be prepared to pay for it, how i wish it wasn't so!
