Greetings Fender masses, I was wondering if you could lend a hand with my dilemma.

I would like to know who out there has swapped their tubes in their Hot Rod Deluxe amps.

I am looking for a warm bluesy sound. If possible could you let me know which tubes you swicthed to get a sound thats in that ball park.

I've had my eye on DRRI it just sounds so warm and creamy to me and I'm wondering if can get some sort of similar tone by switching out the tubes and saving a boatload of cash. The DRRI is 1200cdn, its the Limited Edition Blonde with Jensen Speaker.

Thanks in advance I look forward to reading about your tubes.

I put a set of JJ's Blues Option #1 from Eurotubes. It changed the whole tonal character of the amp. It even tamed the drive channels. Whatever you do be sure to have the amp biased whenever you change the power tubes. (6L6's)

Hi Guys!

Could somebody here explain what they mean by Biasing the amp when you change tubes?

Check out this site. It answers everything (tube types and biasing, as requested here). I'm not sure if the info is correct, but it sure is comprehensive.

You can put in "Groove Tubes, Substitubes" in place of the 6L6 output tubes. It changes it to a class A amp, using 12AX7's as output tubes, and there is no bias adjustment needed. Supposedly it cuts the output wattage in half, but I noticed very little if any change in the "loudness" of my Blues DeVille...it definately made a change in the tone though, especially once they "burned in".... just go to Groove Tubes web page and they explain it.

Are you sure about that??? I've never heard of any product that changes power tubes from 6L6s to 12ax7s which are primarily preamp tubes!

Also dropping the power on a tube amp doesn't usually change the perceived volume, at least not by much. It only causes earlier breakup (less clean headroom) if that's what you're after.

Oh Man, I screwed up....it's not 12AX7's... it uses EL84's as output tubes. My mistake....Sorry.

I may be wrong, but EL34's ( i also think you mean EL84's) may need an adapter like THD Yellow Jackets. Any time you change power tubes you need to bias. Period. The HRDlx is not made to run with EL34's or EL84's or 6v6's for that matter. A friend of mine tried both and both sounded pretty bad IMHO and went back to 6l6's. Some people do like them though. Also I don't believe you can change an amp to a Class A with just a tube change.
I would do a little more research on it. Be careful, there's a ton of misinformation on the internet.

EL-84s sounds more like it with the Yellow Jackets, and I'm pretty sure I've heard of folks running 6V6s with little or no mods other than a bias adjustment. I'll tell you what though, I pair of good quality 6L6s will really make the Hot Rod Deluxe come to life and swapping different preamp tubes can make a difference as well depending on what you're looking for.

Yes those are EL84 (I thought thats what I wrote) And yes, it IS an "adapter" type socket that GT uses...the exact quote from the instructions is as follows:

"The GT928PR also converts your amp into a "self biasing" Class A circuit, Thereby decreasing power and increasing tone while requiring no re-biasing of the amp. You simply plug them in and play"

I have been using them since around Thanksgiving last year and couldn't be happier.

I would suggest going to Groove Tubes web site and take a look for yourself.

I still don't think it will convert your amp to a class A. I believe Class A amps are a different design all together. I can't see how just changing tubes redesigns the amp.
