That's cool Tom De Ville. Not what you originally said, but cool. These are two different things, and neither seems to be applicable in this case.

You should read the OPs other thread, something like "Very happy with BJr III".

No doubt that it worked to begin with. And with a name like indianabones, probably not in the UK, so the UK laws mean nothing.

Next!

All good then! (Btw, he mentioned valves and quoted a price in £ so I guessed he was 'one of us', I didn't actually look at his name!)

Lol, I'm Scottish and it was a nickname from my old work that stuck!

Thanks for all your comments and suggestions on this issue.

originally i was very happy with the Bj as it sounded great when i first got it, you guys will know what I mean when i say I fell in love with the sound. but originally had a problem after a couple of days with the valves and reported it to the shop straight away and was told that it was just because it's new and give it time to settle in, reading forum seemed to agree with this. So left it to see what happened as I knew I had a guarantee anyway!

The guy at Fender has assured me that he will personally make sure the amp is 100% before sending it back to me, check all connections and bais etc, so I think it will be ok from now on and I will again be happy.

Hopefully I will get it back for Thursday as well..cause I'm missing it already.

Thanks again guys, will let you know how I get on, on it's return!

" it took about 20mins to stop glowing " And this was after you turned the amp off? It's a sign of a runaway tube. Either the tube is shorted or the bias isn't correct or working on that tube.

I remember a Peavey Classic 30 that would always have one power tube (also EL84) glow bright orange, regardless of what brand of tube or initial bias reading. It would start to runaway about 15minutes into playing. Ended up be the circuit board had some kinda parasitic oscillation instability issues related to heat. New board fixed the problem.

Hope that your Fender is ok, when you get it back.

Hi Indianabones: just had the same problem with my 2 day-old BJIII, playing really quitely (vol and master right down)- everyone else in bed, sound suddenly went tinny and lost base.

Cos I'd read your thread already I looked 'round the back, sure enough one power tube not glowing at all; the other bright orange - like a 15watt bulb!!!

It started to smell of burning too! I turned it off and back on again, with the vol and master up a bit this time (guitar vol down), seemed ok, for now but I'll keep an eye on it.

I wonder if they object to being run really quietly??

Kinda sounds like Fender really biasing these EL84 hot. I also noticed on the schematic I was able to find, that there are two diodes controlling the plate voltage (CR10 & 11) and two screen resistors (R24 & 25). Perhaps, Fender is skimping a bit on the quality of these two components. And they maybe critical in maintaining the tube's integrity. Just a thought.

It'd be nice to have a bias pot.

Thank you Tom for providing the specific detail. 8)

I was indeed suggesting that it is the shop, not Fender, to whom the obligation applies..

I guess we all know that the truth is, once they have been made to honour their obligation, they'll just put the returned amp back on the sales floor. Eventually the right person will buy it and just fix it..

However, I should report that apart from a reverb tank that failed suddenly, my BJ hasn't given me a moment's trouble in the 4 years I've had it. Still running the original valves too, so the hot biaising can't be too much of a killer..

Oh, and the control pot word stenciling is fast wearing off the silver control plate. (I wonder if there's a Billm mod?)

That's me just had an email to say that amp has been fixed, it was an issue with the valves and they have been replaced, the amp has been checked and it is supposed to fine!

They gave me a courier number to track it, so hopefully it will be here tomorrow and I will see how it is.

adriandavidb...sounds just like mine, when the buzzing started I was playing it quite low, if it starts to buzz really loud, I would guess it's gonnae go, maybe we got a bad batch of valves!!!

let you guys know tomorrow how I get on!

Good news indianabones!

Did they say what the tube problem was? It seemed to me that one tube with an intermittent short (dragging down the bias for the other tube causing it to red-plate also) could cause the problems described with your amp, and others' amp's also.

Either way, I'm anxious for you to get back to rockin' again. Let us know how the amp works. :)

Hopefully the shipping ruffians will be in a "more kind and gentle" mood. 8)

Just a thought; check to be sure no shipping damage on the box when it arrives, and then make sure that all of the tubes are firmly seated in their sockets before turning on.
