Hi guys,

I'm new here, I have bought the Supersonic Head 100 Amp a month ago.

I'm really happy with the amp and have been playing with it for the last month and it's sounding great,

Yesterday I was playing normally in my room, not at a big level, because it was late, suddenly I hear a humm from the amp and the fuse blows.

I change the fuse and it blow again, the I changed the output power to Club (25 watts) and turn on again and it didn't blew the fuse but when I turned on the output tube status on the display in the back, was with an orange light in the tube 2a and a red light in the tube 2b. meaning that the tube 2b was faulty, it was not even lighting up and the others were.

Can somebody help on trying to figured it out what happened?
Could it be a fluctuation of the current, a surge, that made this happened, can it blow a fuse and a tube? or the tube not working could be something else???

Can i use just 2 tubes to test the rest of the amp, in Club mode (25 watts)?

I'm a little nervous about this because this is a new amp and It's really hard for me to find a good technician in the area, so i hope that It only needs to change the tube and it's ok.

Hope that somebody can help me,

Thanks

Hi Ogirdor,

Firstly, you should use your warranty, even tubes are covered for awhile (90 days?), and the amp for five years.

According to the manual that you should have, the red LED indicates that "The tube has failed or is missing.", and the orange LED indicates that "The tube has shutdown. A tube may shutdown when the other tube in the pair (1A/1B) or (2A/2B) is bad or missing."

It appears that you have lost an output tube (red LED), and the fuse blew to protect the amp. If you keep trying it, you will likely f'up something else. Rarely will a fuse blow unless there is a problem. A blown fuse says find the problem first before just continually trying new fuses. There may be no reason other than a bad tube.

If I understand it correctly, you should be able to pull both tubes that the LEDs are lit (orange and red, 2A and 2B), and use the amp with one pair of output tubes. The "Club" switch would still work, but would now switch from 50 watts (two tubes) to 12 watts. This is only what I've gathered from reading about your amp, I have not seen one, or the schematics, but I'm sure there is no harm in using the amp with only two output tubes, just have to be the correct two tubes.

Make sure to mark the bad tube before removing it, so as not to mix it up with the good one.

Always remember, check your warranty, and RTFM.

Hi Shimmilou,

thanks for the quick response, ;).

I've been whatching videos on youtube and saw a really nice from mesa boogie, fro troubleshooting, after that I've been testing the tubes and i figured it out, it's just one tube that i went off, the other 3 are ok. I even play in the Club mode as you say with only two tubes on.

The fuses don't blow anymore, I already wrote for Thomman, as you say the tubes have 90 days warranty so probably they will give me a new set of tubes. Hopefully a quad :D

One question, should i change now just a pair or the all 4 power tubes?

A matched quad would be best, but you could change just one pair with a matched duet and you'll probably be in good shape. I'm not sure how the bias circuit in this amp will react to two different pairs, but as long as the left side two tubes and the right side two tubes draw the same current, I don't see a problem. If I see this correctly, 1A and 1B are a pair (inner) and 2A and 2B are a pair (outer), so 1A and 2A would be one side and 1B and 2B would be the other side. As long as there are two matched pairs (1A and 1B are a pair), the balance between the two sides (1A and 2A are a side) should be equal.

As new as this amp is, you might want to contact Fender with your questions to double-check.

Thanks guys for the info and help. I'm much relaxed now I already wrote for thomann and Fender, from Fender they told I just need to change the all set of tubes that probably because of the transportation there could be one of them that was faulty. So just change the tubes and everything will be alright.

I already made the troubleshooting that is explained on the Mesa Boogie video on you tube and it's just the fault tube that is bad the rest is ok, it's playing also with one matched pair only, so just waiting on the answer of Thomann if they will give me a new pair of tubes to replace these ones.

In USA the tubes that came with the amps have 90 days warranty I don't know in Europe so let's see, hope so.

Once again thanks for the replies and help, I was a little bit nervous since this was a new amp that I gave a lot of money, but now i'm more relaxed, hehehe. A friend already told me "It's a tube amp, it's like that, you have to just deal with it"

I'm thinking on buying to replace the original tubes the SED Winged C 6l6GC, i've heard they're nice for the clean sound and for the overall, which sounds nice. What do you guys have to say for these tubes??

Time to bone up on tube amps. Learn how to do simple service such as tubes. Time to get some extra power tubes and preamp tubes to have on hand. Learn the do's and don'ts, ex.: never turn on without a speaker load, always use speaker cable for speakers not instrument cable. And so on!

Thanks for the info and help.

Thomann already spoke with Fender and they're sending me a set of tubes to change the ones I have.

Anyway now I'm to much interested on getting the Winged C. Probably will order them next month.

Anybody here has the Supersonic 100 Head with the Winged C Tubes to give me some review or info how they work together?

Thanks
