I just purchased a new Hot Rod Deluxe (not the deluxe III) apparently it is a left over model. it distorts at a low volume on the clean channel (2-3) I'm not using any fx at all with my American tele. I don't have that clasic "clean Fender sound" on the normal channel-it sound overdriven. it had one bad pre-amp tue right out of the box so I ordered an exact replacement but it didn't change the sound at all. Any suggestions?

That's the way the Hot Rods are designed. If you are looking for a clean Fender sound at high volume, you bought the wrong amp. Sorry.

If you want a little cleaner sound, replace V1 with a 5751 or a 12AY7. Also, check the power tube bias and make sure it is set properly.

+1

They come biased very cold from the factory. This link has info and a video to show how to check and adjust the bias. Read the few small paragraphs, then the video link for the HRDvl/HRDlx shows how.

Just watched that eurotubes video on biasing a HRD, it is simple to do.
But note what he has on his ring finger?
Mostly a bad idea, gold is a really good conductor, and those fat caps under his hand carry a surprising punch.

Safety first, best to have no unnecessary metal on hands, or dangling chains hanging from neck.
I also use a set of plastic drivers I have from my old B&W(remember B&W? :D) TV repair days.

Rings on BOTH hands, plus a watch. As many times as I have viewed and recommenced that video to others, I have never noticed that.

I bias my amps in the nude, just to be safe.

At least you are not soldering, I have gained more than a few scars from dripped solder over the years.
But nude soldering, Ouch Ouch Ouch!

What guitar are you using ?

Just to compare with my BDLx (clean channel is almost the same): even with my Washburn Hawk, which is the most powerfull guitar I ever have, It doesn't distord at 2~3, even with itinial bias at 60mV. If the bias is correct, your amp is still under warranty, request a exchange.

I'm using an American Delux Ash Tele. But it distorts w/o using the s-1 boost. I have to roll the volume down to around half way to clean it up while the amp is at 2. I watched to video about adjusting the bias. I wonder what will hapen if I set the mv at the minimum. Any Ideas?
I've watched videos on you tube and from Fender and they all praise the clean channel and that's why I bought this amp I bought it for the drive channel and more drive-so it would be nice to have the normal chanel actualy normal. I feel like a cry baby...

Nothing wrong with wanting the best from your amp, and cold factory bias is common. I would say that a typical minimum setting would be 75 to 80 mV at the test point, assuming that you have about 430 Plate volts. You may find that the factory setting is closer to 60 mV, which is low by anyone's standard.

I agree with Shimmilou that the HRdlx is "cold" with 60mV but shouldn't distord. I use my 52 RI Tele in this condition without any distortion.
Let us know the value of your bias, but I feel may be for another issue like a relay stuck ...

Hopefuly this weekend I'll find some time to look into it. I'm confident that I can check the bias but beyond that I'll have to take it to some one who knows better. But thanks again guys for your information and advise! Knowlege is power.
God Bless! :D

Tis-san brings up a good point.

mike's tele,
Do you have a more distorted sound on the drive channels, or is it the same? I presumed that they were different, but if there is no change in distortion when switching channels.....?

There is a noticeable difference between normal, drive and more drive - The overdrive on the appropreate channels sounds great! I'll let you know how things progress this weekend!
Thanks again and God Bless!
