My super sonic 112 has a 8 Ohm Celestion vintage 30 speaker. I'm taking it out and putting it in a 4x12 speaker cabinet, that needs a new 8 Ohm speaker. It's a 8 Ohm cabinet, so I can use it with the super sonic, as well as with all my other amps.

I have a spare 4 Ohm speaker. I want to put it in the super sonic, so I can use it without an external speaker.

All it says in the manual is,
Keep the internal speaker connected to the MAIN SPKR jack for normal operation. Plug an 8 Ohm extension speaker into the EXT SPKR jack and the Super-sonic amplifier will automatically switch to handle a 4 Ohm load.

However, the new internal speaker will be 4 Ohm instead of 8 Ohm.

I'm not very good at reading schematics, but in the top right corner there seems to be some sort of switch at the EXT SPKR jack, that switches to the 4 Ohm output of the transformer. So I think I should connect the single 4 Ohm speaker to the EXT SPKR jack instead of the MAIN SPKR jack.
Is that right?

Hi bertsj,

For the combo, if you want to maintain a 4 ohm impedance match with the new speaker, plug the internal 4 ohm new speaker into the main jack, and plug a "dummy plug" into the external speaker jack. A dummy plug is just a phone plug with no wires attached to it, just use the plug, you can remove one from any instrument or speaker cable. Using the dummy plug will switch the OT to the 4 ohm position. You have to use the main speaker jack because it is a shorting jack to protect the amp if no speaker is plugged in. If you try to use only the external jack, you will get no sound out of the amp, as the main speaker jack will have the output shorted.

For the head, simply select 4 ohms on the selector switch.

You can also safely use the 4 ohm speaker on the amp's 8 ohm setting with no problems. You will not get the full power out of the amp this way, but the sound may be to your liking. A 2:1 impedance mismatch in a tube amp is not a problem, try it and use the setting that sounds best to you.

Make sure to turn the amp to standby or off before plugging or unplugging speakers into the jacks. :!:

+1 shimmilou,

For your information bertsj, more winding you use from your output transformer better the quality of the sound.

Your transformer is 8 ohms but you can use half coil winding ; 4 ohms. remember this is half winding of the transformer.

I should admit "better" quality in the music world does't mean you will preffered this sound, so go head.

Good point stratele52,

Not long ago, experts advised against over-driving the tubes, they thought that it was outrageous. :o
