I'm looking at the jr iii and hrd iii blonde top edition tube amp, i'v played the bjIII on saturday but they didnt have a hrdIII at the store, really liked the clean sound of the bj III and was wondering if i can get the same tone from the hrdIII blonde top, that has the clestion v30 speaker, will the bigger cab of the hrd III have even more of a bassey tone? i play a wide verity of music, and will be playing in band next spring playing small clubs and will be miced up, will purchase a distortion pedal down the road, does the bjiii have an effects loop? Is there anything i should know (any trobles with these amps)? Thanks for any input.

Hi kingding,

You will get much better clean sound, and more volume, from the HRDlx. The BJr does not have an effects loop. The version IIIs are much improved, particularly the HRDlx III has more robust circuit boards and so far has proven to have better reliability due to some of the improvements. I have a HRDlx and BJr, the HRDlx is much better overall, but I got the BJr mainly for the portability. I really enjoy both amps, I think that either would make you happy, but I would go for the HRDlx for more clean and more power and versatility, and the BJr for the portability.

What shimmilou said if you are going hot-rod.
Both the BJ and HRDlx are part of the Hot-Rod family of amps.

But do give them both a listen.
Apart from the different speakers, the HRDlx is 6L6 power tube based and the Blues Junior is EL84 power tube based.
Both very different sounding power tubes.

I've got both, The HRDeluxe & BluesJr. (older versions of both, not the III)
and for the loop, more power, presence control & 6L6s you may want to go with the HRDeluxe.
Although on the smaller gigs, I really like the "brightness" of the ELs in the Jr.
Get 'em both & be as undecided as I am.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but i'm new to the tube amps. If you don't like the sound of the 6l6s in the hrd can you put in the el34s? Has anyone done it?

Hi kingding,

Good question, as some amps can have EL34s or 6L6s, either type selected with a switch. But, not a good idea in the HRDlx without some serious modification. Typically, the EL34 draws about 1.6 amps of filament current each tube, compared to just under 1 amp for the 6L6. You also would have no voltage at pin 1 of the EL34 for one of it's screens, so the bias circuit in the HRDlx would likely have to be altered to get the proper bias current, or some other modification to allow their use.

I certainly wouldn't risk trying EL34s in the HRDlx.

kingding,
Please don't think I'm unhappy with the 6L6s- I've played them all my playing life & love 'em!
The ELs in the Jr., on the other hand, are the "vox-y" sound that until now, I never played with (& I'm lovin' that too.)
To be undecided on what tube/guitars combo to bring to the gig is a dilemma we should all have!
I initially got the Jr. for a back-up to the Deluxe (based on some of the reliability comments I'd read here) but, happily, my Deluxe has only needed one tube change in over 6 years.
If I had to do it again, I wouldn't change a thing- I'd get the HRDeluxe & then a Jr. too.
(UNLESS There was a BFBassman & a Reverb unit around the corner & for short money!!!)

Little side note:
While you can not replace the 6L6's with EL34's

You can replace either 6L6 or EL34 tubes with EL84's using a special "THD Yellow Jacket" adapter.
http://www.tonetronix.com/c/THD-Yellow- ... rters.html

You do have to get the correct adapter kit for your amp.

Never used or seen them in person, so no idea how good or bad they really are.

Yes, yes, yes, me too, especially the tube reverb tank !!!
