can an amp be too dynamic? maybe. leo was always improving his designs to eleminate distortion and improve clarity at high volumes. it didn't always work. but, he did improve amp dynamics it seems every time a new amp model and year that came. i have a bdri and i discovered that if you intrduce a compressor to the effects loop and ever so slightly retard the dynamics of the amp you can get some very nice tones from it. just for the record i play a l.p. and an e.c. strat as well as a mim standard with 57/62 pups. all the guitars have their own personality and all do better with a more compressed sound. i can get a nice clean sound to a sweet overdrive sound with just volume changes from the guitar. i was surprised when i tried the compressor in the loop( it's the only pedal i use). maybe when they mostly stopped using rectifier tubes in most amps(at least the cheaper ones) they probably didn't help the tone of those amps. i have played many amps with different rectifier tubes in the past and it seems that a s.s. rectifier does improve the dynamics of the amp it does nothing for the overdrive and overall feel and tone of the amp. this is probably an old arguement but it has merit. now, it may be that i have a different taste in the music and sound i like but i think we all could benifit from amp manufacturers to start to rediscover the benifits of amp(tube) compression. i know diodes are cheaper but i'm sure amp manufacturers (fender) can make some cheaper priced amps that have tube rectifiers. those tubes are cheap. cheaper being some where in the same price range of the blues deluxe or lower price.

Ok. You prefer the sound of your BDRI with a compresser in the loop. I used to use a compresser at the front of my BDRI but now prefer the sound without a compresser. I use a JAN GE 12AY7 in V1 and JJ 12AX7s in V2 and V3 with JJ 6L6GCs biased at 36 mA plate current @ 413 VDC plate voltage. Different strokes for different folks.

thanks for the reply. i may have been misunderstood. i think i should have said "tube sag". i wasn't trying to boast about the use of compressors, more that the amp manufacturers should use more tube rectifiers in their tube amps. with the bdri being a "blues" based amp it should've had one. i just use the compressor to simulate the compression lost with the s.s. rectifier. i see this thread doesn't have many replies, i was hoping for more. i must have ticked people off. i see lots of people have viewed it.sorry....

Hello gtrnuttoo,

You didn't tick me off; I read your post with great interest. I too have `experimented' with compressors to simulate tube sag on my amp (Deluxe Reverb Reissue). I was never satisfied with the results so I'm staying with just the amp and guitar combination (Les Paul Standard).

I'm just a straight in Blues guy so this works the best for me.

It's much easier to use a compressor to tame a dynamic sound, than to get some extra dynamics from a compressed sound. So it makes perfect sense to me that the sound is not compressed by default.

I agree. I think one of the many qualities people like from the cranked amp sound is the compression or sag they hear/feel

you can't get the "sag" effect when your amp with a s.s. rectifier is turned down to bedroom levels. i did some research and found a mod for sag effect that can be done to a tube amp. it involves a wire wound resistor and some circuit changes (breaking power and connecting it differently). i don't care to dig into my amp for a subtile change. you can use a different ohm resistor to get different amounts of sag. it starves the output section of a little power and produces the sag. but some serious bias problems can result if it is not done correctly. i mostly use the compressor when i play my les paul through my bdri, when i play my e.c. strat i don't use it.some reason the e.c. strat dosen't need the compressor. maybe it's the fender with a fender thing. just for reference i use tung-sol 6l6 str with early breakup and 12ax7wc pre amp tubes.

I have a Super-sonic 60W. I use the compressor in the front for LP and MIM Tele and turn it of for my Strat AM Deluxe.
