Oh, boy! A 15-watt, single-12 combo with a spring reverb, a solid-state rectifier, a retro look and a famous '70s nameplate, all for six bills! What a concept!

Should have called it a VT Jr.

It does seem to have some interesting and potentially useful features -- like the dual-power setting (which I assume alters the amp's architecture from P-P class AB to single-ended class A operation) and the multiple-impedance output taps for connection to alternate speaker loads.

Those 70s silver face Ampegs were not very interesting guitar amps, so I would guess this has nothing in common with them. I played through a VT22 from about 1972 until 1975 when it finally got traded for a 50 watt Marshall, and that damn thing would not break up until it was loud enough to deafen outdoor crowds. If you wanted loud, they had it in spades.

+1

The VT22 (aong with its V4 head cousin) was the loudest 125-watt amp to ever be rated for 100 watts!

It would easily smoke a 135-watt ultra-linear Twin Reverb in the raw output department. The best I ever saw from one of those Fenders was 122 watts from a bench-test rig but using identical input signals, dummy output loads, and measurement equipment, the Ampeg pegged out at 125. Those 7027A power tubes were absolute brutes!

You can get pretty good used Ampegs off EBay or CL. They are a bit harder to work on, than Fenders. I have two 1962 ReverboRockets. They are very nice amps. I doubt ANY RI would approach their tone. Prolly for two reasons.

1.) The use of US made 6SL7GT, 6SN7GT tubes in the front end. And the Westinghouse 7591A in the power stage. Some of the best tubes ever made. And 2.) capacitance coupled reverb tank.

Check out the latest list:

Wow that J-12 Jet was my first amp. That how I learned about tube break up. Man that sounded good.

They were pretty great tubes. But the 7591 (and the 7199 that was frequently used as a PI in many of these Ampeg platforms) is a pretty obscure bottle, relatively speaking. Thus, expensive to replace when that event occurs.

One other warning about replacing the 7591(A). The new EH 7591A doesn't fit in a lot of amps. Or are so close together, you have heat and electro-magnetic coupling issues (causes the oddest motorboating sound you'll hear). The bottles of the EH 7591A are about the size of a 6L6GC. The NOS Westinghouse 7591A has same diameter & is a little bit taller than a 6V6GT.

Electro-Harmonix 7591A:

Westinghouse made Fisher labeled:
