The Gold is slightly brighter than I'd anticipated, but I'm still in single digits for break-in hours and expect it to mellow out some.

It took many hours to get the Gold to sound right, I'd say maybe 50 hours! I got tired of waiting so I just hooked it up to my stereo system and kept the music playing for a few hours, disconnect and play a bit to see what it sounds like, then repeat the process til I was satisfied. I even took my amp to the jam a few times and let everyone there play through it to help break it in.

Answer = no, the culprit was the new JJ ECC81 Gold-pin (AT7) I had installed in the PI position - this was instantly fixed by replacing the original tube and the JJ now going back to the dealer.

Anyone else experienced this phenomenon when replacing the PI tube in DRRI?

FBB.

I don't trust JJ tubes, and I feel the same way about GT and Tung-Sol, you never know what kind of tubes you'll end up with!

As BMW mentioned, the Philips and Sylvania 12AT7 are great and I also had great results with the Mullard 12AT7, in both PI and reverb driver.

Do you give lessons??

I for one amp happy with the mods I've done to my amps and my guitars. With Arjay's help I got me one mean sounding DRRI! My upgraded Strat plugged into my Spankmaster produces some to die for tone, and both have been extremely reliable!

I say if you wanna mod you gear go for it, but do it right and do one thing at a time 'til you reach your goal.

Incremental "baby steps" will actually accomplish more in less time than the typical "rip-and-tear artists" who immediately gut a new piece of equipment and replace everything with dubious parts recommended by phalanxes of forum "egg-spurts" then scratch their heads in bewilderment when the collective mods don't produce any measureable improvement.

JMOOC, YMMV, KDTTAH, PDOACCTT, etc.

Thanks for your comments Cedarblues.

Hooking up my iPod right now (why are we so impatient?) so appreciate this obvious, but overlooked break-in tactic.

Also note the dealer I used actually offers a Jan Phillips 12AT7WC/ecc81 USA on their website so will be checking that out too (dealer bun fight, here we come). Disappointed they offered me a JJ instead as this tube in PI was certainly a bad move.

I'm actually using a Tung Sol in V1 and it is really sweet + I've had their 6V6s sitting in the power stage for some time and really like them so its perhaps difficult to generalise across manufactures for all tubes?

Still, it keeps us coming back and my 'to die for' tone is maturing nicely.

FBB.

PS - Arjay: your code above has me a bit baffled, but I get the general gist and agree step-by-step is the only sensible way. :)

The process is much faster if you play just white noise. It contains all frequencies at the same time, especially the low ones are important.

I'm still getting used to it on stage. The last two shows I played with it, I have to say, haven't given me a chance to turn it up to a good potential. Going back to the original subject of my first thread (Princeton VS. Deluxe), a lot of people say that the princeton is too quiet for a live gig with drums. But if it's even half as loud as this Deluxe, I'm sure it would be fine, we're a loud band too, but then again, we mic our amps for larger rooms.

Oh well, looks like I'll have to get a princeton too!

White noise or Pink (freq. compensated) noise?

The "process" doesn't require any specific frequency or frequency range -- all the signal needs to do is provide some cone movement to help take the edge off of brand-new diaphrams, surrounds, suspensions, and the adhesive used to hold them all together in harmonious symbiosis.

Thanks Arjay.

"harmonious symbiosis" -think I'll try and work that phrase into a meeting tomorrow at work!

There has been a few posts here about Tung-Sol and JJ... forum member BMW did some tests with Tung-Sol 6V6, here's the links to the discussions

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=55350

http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=56864

I had a pair of Tung-Sol 6V6 in my DRRI that sounded good, but developed a nasty rattle after a month. The second pair sounded like crap! I also had a pair of JJ 6V6 that rattled badly new! I didn't care for the tone either...

After trying many different tubes my recommendation will always be NOS first, if you can find them, TAD for new production tubes.

I've also had Tung-Sol preamp tubes in my amps, now they're all sitting there collecting dust or have been given away to friends...

Nothing wrong with having both a DR and PR  but the DR will always cut through the mix better, even with a loud drummer. The 12" and bigger cab help, and it projects well. A DRRI with a 15" takes it to a whole new level!

Yes. The cone moves more with bass frequencies, it hardly moves with high frequencies. Whether it's white or pink noise does not matter here, it's only important that the low frequency is there, distribution does not matter. If you have two speakers, it's better to use pink noise, invert the phase for one speaker and put them facing each other, so they cancel their noise.

Cheers

What about a PRRI with a 12" speaker replacement? The other guitarist in my main bread-and-buter group plays through a Blues Jr and never really goes above 3-4 on the master. Would that be an improvement to my tone, without blowing him out of the room volume-wise?

A 12-inch upgrade to a PRRI is a worthy mod IMO.

Get a new purpose-designed baffle and store the original and its OEM speaker so you can return the amp to stock trim and sell it in OEM condition if/when the decision to dispose of the amp ever arrives.
