Anything that I should know. Anything I should do to it? Anyone swear by a certain mod?

Hey baerashbrewer,

Am in the same boat as you...bought a DRRI about a month ago, and thanks to the posts on this forum  I been considering some mods as well. What I've been thinking of doing (and prob in this order):

1. The Fritz mod.
2. Speaker replacement. I'm liking the Weber 12A125 or 12A150 (Suggestions welcome) Will wait a bit longer to let the stock Jensen stock speaker fully break in.
3. Tube replacement.

Anyway, probably like you, would like to know what some of the very knowledgeable guys here think...

There are some things that I would like to try to suit to my playing style. I would like to have more control over the reverb. Although, over the years I have just been bypassing amp reverb and using a nice TC electronic reverb, so I could have more control over it.

The Fritz mod seems pretty simple. and I have been thinking about plugging a Strat into the one side and my LP into another, so that would be a great mod, since they would each have their own volume control (only need to worry about that if I end up using the spring reverb).

Also, anyone use an A/B switcher (disregarding the previous Strat/LP comment) and use it for boost lead between the two channels? Not a mod, but seemed like it could be a sweet idea. If I wanted the reverb and tremolo, def would have to do the fritz mod though.

Also, if anyone says "it'll ruin the resale value." Don't care. Some say that "if you need to mod it, you bought the wrong one." I say, if you plan to sell it someday, then really, you bought the wrong one. :)

...check the bias....break-in the speaker!!!!! There are a number of ways to accelerate the break-in proceedure. Swap out a couple of preamp tubes....assuming it has stocker's in there now, reissue Tung Sols' may be a nice, inexpensive tweek. I've been tinkering with a delay pedal and various dirt boxes into channel 1 to compliment reveb channel 2.

Still not ready to start messing with the circuit though...but never say never :D

I like your thinking :)

IIRC you bought a used DRRI? What speaker is in there? The best thing you can do for your amp is get the right tubes and do a proper bias.

I have the Fritz mod and I always play through the "Normal" channel now that I have reverb...

But if you wanna go crazy you can convert your DRRI into one of Arjay's signature amps, the Spankmaster Reverb!

It's a 2006, used. So the speaker is broken in pretty well. I need to check out the tubes. Probably will this weekend. This thing is amazing! Man, I don't know why I never had one before. You always hear about how amazing they are, but man, until you take one home, crank it and rip, you'll never know! I'm so amazed by how it just thumps. I can feel it in the floor boards, even at lower volumes.

Personally, I think the DRRI sounds great stock. I wouldn't change a thing. I look at amps like this, if I'm going into a new purchase with the intent to mod what I'm buying, then I'm buying the WRONG amp. That's just me though, if I don't like something that I buy brand new enough to NOT change it, then I shouldn't be buying it.

Some people are hung up on mods because they like to put their own little "mark" on their gear. Which is cool I guess if you're into that sort of thing.

I think that the DRRI sounds great right off the shelf. The tone knobs on your amp & guitar, your fingers, & your choice of pedals will give you all the versatility you'll ever need through the DRRI. The only thing I'd do to that amp if I were you would be play the heck out of it & enjoy it for what it is & what it is meant to be...

Well, most the mods that I am talking about aren't going to change the tone or feel of the amp. However, for live purposes it would make sense to link the two normal and vibrato channels if I would want to plug in two guitars. The purpose of the thread was not so much to say "I just bought something, I want to screw with it!" The thing is, I play over 150 gigs a year, in different sized venues from a 20 person bar, to 800 person clubs, to art centers, and conservatorys. I would love to be able to use the DRRI in a lot of situations. Someday, I would like to own the Princeton, the Deluxe, and the Twin. But until then...

Just found this on the telecaster forum (I play Gibsons, SO DON'T TELL!)...

I had an all original 1963 Deluxe Reverb and my friend left his DRRI at my house for a while. I A/B'ed the two extensively. I was quite disappointed that my vintage deluxe reverb didn't really sound that much different than the reissue. I'm an amp tech. Time is money. If you just want to plug and play, get the RI. If you want a potentially expensive project, restore the silverface.

This makes me feel that JPH74 is totally correct about his assertions and I don't want anyone to feel that I was attacking. The mods I am talking about are purely gigging mods. I also really like the way that quote makes me feel about my recent purchase, too! :D

I think you made a wise choice. My '93 DRRI has now been "deployed" about 225 times in the five years I've owned it with no problems whatsoever. I did change the speaker (both its size and type) and re-tube it with NOS glass then pumped up the bias a skosh. As well, I've done the Fritz mod on mine since I use both channels via an A/B/Y footswitch. These amps are really the paradigm of a grab-and-go combo, with great tone and brawn enough for all but the largest venues.
