I have a HRD only a few months old. I live in an old 1950's house in Florida.

I have a good solid ground on the outlet that my amp is plugged into.

I'm getting a slight crackling and popping sound. I've eliminated everything except a power issue, or an amp issue.

It almost sounds like static electricity. I can only hear it with a guitar plugged in. Tried multiple guitars, multiple cables, both inputs.... same thing.

After reading lots of threads on this forum, It sounds like it could be a pre-amp issue... but how can I eliminate that it's not coming from my power line?

Would a power conditioner help with this if it was line noise??

Hi twaite,

That sounds more like marbles or silver coins being dropped into someone's hand, nothing like static or crackling at all. And the hum coming from the amp sounds like a bad ground to me, or as if the cable isn't plugged into the guitar. :? Is this a joke?

"I can only hear it with a guitar plugged in."

A 1950s house would typically be a two wire with no ground at the outlets, maybe even screw-in fuses. Did you rewire with a physical ground wire ran to outlets? Using a two-prong adapter to plug into the wall outlet may not be giving you an actual ground connection.

No joke bro. Guess the cell phone doesn't pick up the sounds too good, huh? Glad to see a sense of humor on the forums!

There's no hum when the guitar is unplugged. No crackling.

Yeah, I ran a fat ground wire out to the outdoor faucet. 8) You shoulda heard the noises before!

Maybe I should isolate the ground. I'm starting to notice that crackling happens only after it rains.

I think that you are on to something. Pipes are not a good ground and shouldn't be used, but sometimes are used as an "easy" alternative, and this can give you a tingle of electricity in the shower. In order to do it properly, the fuse box should be changed to a breaker panel with a proper ground connected only at the panel. A proper ground would be a stake driven in the ground near the panel and connected to the panel and incoming ground (check length, 6 ft in the ground?). Then of course, each outlet should have its ground connected to the breaker panel.
