Thanks, but I don't want to be a "very sweet sounding player"!

I'll say!

You got the meanest licks in Tampa, CB.

A very mean sounding player is what I'd like to be called

I wouldn't spend any money on a CVR, too many musician friends reported problems with hiss and I didn't personally care for its tone, plenty other amps out there for me...

And honestly, that is the perfect response. Rather than dump a bunch of money into having a tech mod it into something else, just go buy something else that makes you happy in the first place. I on the other hand, love the way the CVR sounds - but that's me. I'm a huge fan of the CVR, but I'm also very aware that it's not an everything to everyone amp.

Agree! That's why I chose the 63 VVRI instead, I wanted a smaller 6L6 amp... plus it looks way cooler! :D

The whole tube replacement thing is way overblown in my opinion. There are subtle differences, but a person’s ability to play makes more of difference.

I have to disagree... the right tubes are just as important as any other mod, like speakers for example. Finding the right tubes and setting the bias will turn an ok sounding amp into a very sweet sounding amp.

I agree with your second statement, but a person's ability to play will only improve and sound better when the amp is performing at its best.

I agree that the right tubes can make an amp sound better. But it will not fundamental change the amp. It probably will not turn the worst sounding amp ever into the best sounding amp ever.

We can't assume that it was just the JJ tubes in there... plus we don't know who the person is that bought the amp and whether he needs to spend time learning how to play, he could be a pro or a working musician that wanted to make the amp sound the way he wants it to but didn't have any luck...

Never meant to say it was the JJs. Have JJs in some of my amps and like them. Just pointing out that the amp was no longer stock.

They aren't for everyone that's for sure. Any die-hard blackface guy would probably not like this amp at all. It is also a one trick pony of sorts. Great for blues and classic rock. Jazz, surf, country... not so much. I can only image the horrified expression on someone's face when they play this amp for the first time expecting to hear blackface tones.

I'll even flame myself here. A weekend warrior like myself who is happy to play out once a month and make enough to cover strings and gas shouldn't be obsessing about the dynamics of the amp as much as I am. No one listening can tell that I am using an overdrive pedal or overdriving the amp. My time would be better spent improving my playing technique and knowledge of theory. But I am a guitarist and become obsessed with the minutia.

I dunno about you but I can remember the days when I'd buy a brand new Fender amp in the afternoon then take it to a gig that very same evening. No fiddling, no diddling, no mods -- just set the thing up on the band riser and honk!

And it sounded great.

About a year ago we did a fundraiser battle of the bands gig. The back-line was provided by one of the other bands. The guitar player was really a nice guy and even let us use his pedal board. He had too many pedals on the board to even count. Then there was the choice of two amps. A blackface deluxe and I think it was a Marshall stack with some other equipment I couldn't identify. Between that stack and the pedal board there were more blinking lights, switches and dials then on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise. I opted to plug directly into the blackface deluxe. After our set he commented that he had never heard that blackface deluxe sound so good and was asking what pedals I had used. He seemed surprised that the guitar had been plugged straight into the amp.

Keep it organic baby.

 Sometimes the simplest setup is the right setup. I think some guys get caught up in that quest for tone and it's always about adding the next piece, but few ever think to scale back.

He actually sounded really good playing through that stack with all the pedals, and his band was real tight. I was afraid I'd lose my mind trying to operate it all and forget what chords to play.

1+

I thinned out my stompbox collection about fifteen years ago and never looked back. I don't miss them in the least.

Same here with the stompbox collection....every so often I'll get the bug to try something new and buy a pedal to play with for awhile, but when it all comes around to playing live, there's usually only a pedal tuner between my guitar and a very capable Fender tube amp, with the volume up....I'm too simple minded to have too much gear.

It took me about 20 years to start buying pedals, the only 3 or 4 I bought were OD pedals... I'm a plug n play kinda guy, if I can't turn the amp up to get a little breakup I use my BB Preamp and I'm done!

Not the worst sounding amp, but an amp with potential can sound like crap with the wrong tubes and bias... for example, take a simple amp like a Deluxe Reverb, if it has some crappy tubes and a very cold bias it will sound like $hit, horrible highs and lows! Throw in a good pair of 6V6 and set the bias hot and it's a completely different animal.
