Guys,

I've got a Celestion Gold 12" driver arriving later to day as the final link in a recent upgrade programme for my beloved DRRI.

With the baffle now out, I will have to remove 4 of the 8 original fixing bolts as the Celestion Gold speaker has 4 x fixing holes.

The bolts have a good tight fix in the baffle and I could of course simply cut off the 4 x unwanted bolts flush and leave it at that. However, I might want to re-install the Jensen C12K 'as original' at some point in the future and a destructive intervention such as this does not seem right.

So, this weekend, I face the prospect of removing the silver baffle material (speaker grille), knocking out the unwanted bolts and refitting the covering material.

I've found plenty of forum chatter about speaker swap-outs in the DRRI, inc. using the Gold, but I can find nothing to show experiences of speaker grille removal/refit as per above.

Anything worth sharing out there with this Brit before I commit to unpicking staples and unwrapping the baffle board?

Cheers,
FBB.

Remove only the staples from the bottom of the baffle board plus a sufficient amount up each of the sides to provide full access to the speaker mounting screws. If you're careful and have a good eye for detail, you'll be able to re-attach the cloth in the same manner in which it was originally installed. Use ½-inch staples and a good-quality staple gun. When re-attaching the cloth, start with the center of bottom first and pull it good and taut. Use the horizontal portion of the cloth weave as a visual guide to keep it square to the bottom edge. Work your way towards each of the corners simultaneously and do not spare the staples. Then begin each of the sides simultaneously, working from top to bottom. Once you have the cloth satisfactorily stapled, gently tap them with a hammer to ensure that they're seated flush with the edge of the board.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay

Why not drill four more holes in the Celestion to fit over the bolts?

Do you know what happens to a loudspeaker when foreign matter (especially steel tailings and micro-slivers) find their way into the voice coil's magnet gap?

Two key words in my original post I want to avoid anywhere in this project "destructive intervention".

+ the resale value of the Gold will necessarily be reduced if I drill it.

Thanks for your comments Arjay - the Gold has arrived: let the fun begin!

You don't have to remove the grill cloth to remove the screws... I installed a Gold in my DRRI, I had to cut 2 of the screws in half to get them out, I believe it was the top and bottom cause the grill is too tight in that area, the other two came out ok, just be careful when you're stretching the cloth. 4 screws are plenty enough for the Jensen if you decide to put it back in... if the 25 lbs EV SRO only needs 4 screws I don't see why the Jensen needs 8 :)

You'll love the Gold in the DRRI! But if it's a brand new speaker you'll need 40-50 hours to break it in, mine sounded too harsh when new.

Good luck!

The Jensen needs eight screws because Leo said it did.

'Nuff said!

It didn't stop some from trying......including many contemporary amp designers who work out on the West Coast. They haven't seemed to have won any arguments lately though.

Cheers cedarblues, but this is 'no screw cutting territory' so the grille cloth is now partially off, screws out and cloth back on with baffle now waiting for the speaker!

Out for beer tonight so may wait until tomorrow to wake up the Gold!

I have experience with Blues in a Vox AC30 so high expectations rolling here!

Man you don't waste any time! cutting the screws is no big deal and easily replaced if you decide to add all 4 screws back in... but if you already managed to remove the cloth then no need, I wasn't gonna mess with that thing! :)

Let us know how it sounds and we love pics over here!

Those screws cost two bucks a pop, CB.

And you know how frugal I am......I never waste nothin'!

BREAKING IN YOUR SPEAKER (from Watford Valves website)

Brand new speakers usually require a “breaking in period”. Start with a few minutes with low-level playing or background hum. Then, turn up the power amp volume to full, and control the level with the preamp gain and play with a fat, clean tone.

Have the bass and mid up full, and the treble at least half. On your guitar, use the middle pickup position (if your guitar has more than one pickup) and play for 10-15 minutes using lots of open chords, and chunky percussive playing. This will get the cone moving, and should excite all the cone modes and get everything to settle in nicely.

No problems refitting the grille cloth at all - went back like new.

I noted adhesive had been used on the edges of the cloth wrap-around in the factory build, so I also used some for good measure.

Worth noting how the 4 x unwanted screws I removed have a left-handed thread as they bite into the wood of the front baffle - this fooled me for a couple of moments, but then I realised.

They are actually really interesting screws so no wonder they are 2$ (each?)

Now clocking run-in hours.
