Oh geez, we're getting into signature amps now? And not just one - but a whole line of them?

Those probably sound great with his signature Gibson guitar.

Not sure if this is a good direction to go for Fender. Making boutique amps. Certainly pricing this new line out of the range of most young guitarists, today.

Apparently, FMIC has now entered the high-end "collectibles" business.

Like Danbury Mint, Hubbell figurines, and presentation-grade firearms.

This shift in marketing stategy is sad. It's like Fender is saying only old-farts with $$$ are interested in our amps anymore. They should be concentrating on quality, no-frills, RELIABLE entry-level stuff (do I hear Champ and Princetons, of the past?). Because we all know, once you get a young one hooked on a product--- he's yours for life.

The young axe heroes I know are so surprised how good a silverface VC can sound. Now, if they could go into GC and try a similar quality VC-like Fender, you may have a new fan. I have sold a quite a few restored VC, Champs, and Princetons over the last few years. So there is a market out there...

It is as if the title of the thread was "Attention Negative Nellys, Let's Speculate".

Fender has added something different to their extensive line of amps, and the wild speculation begins. Who knows what their strategy is, but it's doubtful they have abandoned or changed any successful strategy just because they added some amps. It's not like they have dumped all cheap amps and only offer the expensive stuff. You lika, you buy. You no lika, you no buy, simple.

Why piss on someone's parade?

I hear you, and agree with you, however the market has changed significantly since the 1970's. Back then, there were a handful of amp makers - and most of them were made in the USA. Now, there's dozens of amp brands and many of them offering major features for cheap because they make them overseas and basically rip off older successful amp circuits.

When I first started out, all I could afford was a $150 cheapo copy guitar and an equally cheap solid state amp. I remember having to finance my first "real" Fender (94 Squier Series) and that guitar was only $300.

Now, I hardly give a thought to dropping $1000+ on a guitar or amp. Why? Because now I have a career and have an income/lifestyle that allows me the freedom to do so.

So really, as much as we look down on them, the current XD Champs, FM series, and Mustang Amps are doing what they're supposed to.

Not sure what an original Vibro Champ cost back in say, 1970, but convert that to 2011 dollars and I'm sure it would be out of reach for many a young player.

As for the idea of a signature amp line (EC), I really can't understand it. The only time I could see a player's name on a signature amp would be if that player is known for having a very unique or heavily modified rig which contributed to their sound. Clapton's only real amp criteria seems to be that is should be a vintage Fender.

Forty years ago a Vibro Champ listed for about $115. Currently, they're often found for $475 or even less. Most zit-poppers today spend that much for a Sony Play Station or an iPhone.

Using an inflation calculator, $115 in 1970 would cost $638 in 2010. So technically, an original VC has depreciated.

Yes, used VC's can be picked up for the $400 range, but if everyone started looking for them, the prices would shoot up very quickly.

Where can I order one of these??? Since I consider EC's tone today to be one of the worst I ever heard I can't wait to get my hands on one of the amps he helped develop!

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to buy a RELIABLE new entry level amp. Look, take the Fender Champion 600 Reissued amp (which goes for under $200). Put in another $100 for better quality boards and parts. Put it into a plain-Jane cab (what's with all this Reissued look-alikes anyhow? Fender never had them in their glory days). Tighten up the QA.

How many ppl would buy it? At $300? And not have to worry about paying another $100 for after-market mods and parts. And all the hassles of getting the mods put in? And the extra reliabililty issues with after-market mods.

Certainly would appeal to a wider audience than an EC blessed tweed Champ. I would think.
