Stronger may be a subjective term. I'm just curious if there are preamp tubes that are considered more robust so less likely to blow and/or resist crackling noises, volume shifting and microphonic issues. My Brand new Hot Rod Deluxe has the stock tubes. I have already had two separate preamp tube issues.

The dealer has also suggested I do not use the foam-rubber insulator that surrounds the first 2 preamp tubes. He said that it may help resist overheating???

The rubber is to lower microphonic coupling and for sure doesnt help to cool down valves.
However, there are no issues with preamp valves on my BDRI very close to HRDlx, Shimmilou will talk about HRdlx (I didn't test at noon, in the sun and tropical condition !!!). May be the quality of valves is the cause.

Buy good quality tubes. I do not consider the GTs that come stock in these amps to be good quality. I like JJ tubes. Very quiet and no problems with microphonics. Shimmilou likes the higher end Groove Tubes. Others prefer various NOS tubes. Just make sure whatever you buy are tested for noise and microphonics.

I use the rubber dampers from Eurotubes. No problems with heat and they seem to do the job.

The toughest 12AX7-type tubes I've used are the 1950's black plate 5751's. I like the Sylvania, GE, Raytheon, & RCA three-micas. And the two mica Raytheon (windmill getter). These tubes were original designated for B-52 use and ICBM missiles. So they are designed to take very high G-forces. They last forever.

All of which can be quite pricey:

I am fond of this 5751 which is reasonably priced for an NOS JAN tube:

Pricey is correct. But these are tough tubes. In fact, I can't even think of a poor sounding NOS Raytheon or TungSol tube. And by far, the toughest of the lot are Bendix Red Bank tubes. Truly overbuilt to obscene excess. I've used their rectifiers and power tubes--- some still working fine 15-20 years later...

I like a 12au7 for V1. A long black plate RCA 12ax7 for V3 and you can experiment for v2!
