Does anyone know what makes the reissue Champ break up at a lower volume compared to Victoria 518 and other boutique 5f1s. I've got a Cox champ which sounds great but I'd like to get it to break up a little sooner on the volume knob. I've currently got a Sovtek 12ax7wc which is supposed to have more gain than the 12ax7wa.

You might try a 12AT7 or even a 12AY7 in your V1 position. A 5751 could just be the ticket as well.

so the lower tubes output the quicker it will break up? I was thinking the opposite.

A 5751/12AT7/12AY7 have less gain than a 12AX7 and will allow for later breakup in the power tubes. I would go with a 5751 first and then try a 12AY7 if breakup is still too early. 12AT7s are better as driver tubes. Besides, the 12AT7 and 5751 have about the same gain. 12AY7 has even less gain.

I'm wanting earlier breakup not later.

Then you need to use a HIGHER gain preamp tube to drive the power tubes harder or get some power tubes that are graded to break up earlier.
