Think of it like this:

The on/off switch is like the ignition
Standby is Park
Standby set to "on" is Drive

So you turn your car on, let it warm up for a minute or two in park, and then you put it in drive and go. If you're going to be sitting for a while, you might want to put it back in park, but keep the engine running and idle.

We could also consult the owner's manual:

Quote:
O. STANDBY - Switch into Standby instead of turning the
power off during short breaks to keep the tubes warm and
ready to play; switch into Standby before turning the
power on — and stay in Standby for 30 seconds after the
power is on. These procedures will extend the life of your
amplifier tubes.
P. POWER SWITCH - Turns the Blues Deluxe on-off.

I think Billm has debunked the standby warm up and shut down theories. I just flip mine on and use my tuner as a mute switch between sets else just turn the volume down on the guitar.

What? Billm sells standby switches in kits to add on to amps that don't have it. There is no "theory" about the fact that tubes can benefit from a warm up time, before slamming the high voltage on them. And a cool down period is also beneficial for tubes. Not so much of an issue when turning on amps that are tube rectified, as the high voltage ramps up slower with tube than solid state (BDRI has ss rect). A standby switch is also great when swapping guitars/pedals.

I guess it depends

"This has come up numerous times in the past, and the bottom line is that lower-voltage amps like the Blues Junior don't need standby. Higher-voltage amps experience cathode stripping during warmup, where the high plate voltage literally pulls metal ions off the cathode, which gunks up the grids and wears out the cathode coating.

But many players find a standby switch to be handy for equipment changeovers and the like, and since the output tubes consume most of the power in the amp, it would make sense to provide them with a standby...........

Cathode stripping only occurs at voltages over 500V. The BJr runs at 330V, so it isn't an issue. "

As I said I use my tuner to mute that way I don't have to get to the back of the amp, especially when it is in tilt back mode.

Love my Blues Deluxe Reissue. I have posted a lot of stuff in this forum on my experiments with different tube and speaker upgrades. Do a search on my screen name and BDRI and you should find them.

I love the sound of this amp too. However, the last three times I used it there was this annoying buzz going on. It seemed to be louder than when I first played it (which is only like 10 days ago). When I put my (left) hand around the neck of my guitar the buzz isn't there. So when I'm playing chords the buzz isn't that annoying since my hand is placed around the neck. When I'm switching to another chord or when I play open strings: there it is again...

I followed the manual instructions: swtiching to standby during short brakes and what not.

Is this a known issue with these amps? Do I need a better cable (got this cheap thing now)?

Let me know please..

Hi jaymie66,

The noise is from your guitar, NOT the amp. It could be a grounding issue with the guitar, as evidenced by the fact that when you touch the strings the noise is less. It could be the cable, easy enough to try another, but noise is common with single coil guitars like a Strat.

Hi shimmilou,

Thanks for clearing it out for me.

I'll try a more expensive cable. I never would have thought it could be the guitar. I'm new to this.

It's been about two months now. I've played the amp nearly every day keeping in mind the user manual instructions (not turning it on directly but let it stay in stand by for about 30 secs, switching it to stand by during short brakes and what not).

However, all of a sudden it started to 'rattle' today. The first 20 minutes sounded just like every other day. Then suddenly there was this rattle every time I plucked a string/chord. A sort of 'loose screw somewhere' sound. At first I thought (hoped) it was something in my room causing the sound. Unfortunately it was my amp.

Does anyone else have this problem? I know I still have my warranty. I figured I'll check on the forum first to see if this is a common problem.

Let me hear your thoughts.

It can be a coupling effect due to the speaker vibration:
- a piece of wood or something else is vibrating at a certain frequency
- one valve is microphonique
--> counter measure: find the part that is vibrating (for instance re-screw the speaker ...). If it is a valve, put a damper or change it
Another possibility is the speaker itself (it was the case on mine).

Consider to send back to the dealer for repairing, it is under warranty (five years) and valves for 3 months. Do not open the rear if you have no electronic skills, there are lethal voltages within.

I will take it back somewhere next week... Hate the hassle though, it's heavy and I will have to carry it all the way to the shop.

I guess I'm unlucky. Such a bummer though, damaged my faith in Fender amps just a little bit :P.

I'll let you know when they find out what went wrong.
