Hello guys!

Today I got myself this nice BDRI. Since it is my first amplifier (and electric guitar I bought with it), I would like some advice.

A buddy of mine told me to 'warm up the amp first' before playing it. He couldn't get into details since he is not familiar with amps, he 'just heard it somewhere'.

I tried searching this forum for an answer. The only thing I came across was the stand by mode for 2 minutes. Do I leave the other knob set to 'off' as I set the other one to stand by?

Looking forward to your knowledge! :D

Kind regards,

Great amp you have.

Let warm-up filaments for a couple of minutes before standby to ON. After playing, let the amp in standby mode in order to cool down for a couple of minutes and switch OFF. Don't forget to wait to let the amp coll down to room temp before move it. It's only advices.

You don't need to leave it in standby before turning off or let it cool down before moving. Those are just old wives tales.

As you prefer.

All vacuum tubes share certain operating characteristics regardless of the application, including warm-up and cool-down protocols.

I routinely get ten to fifteen years' service out of a bottle no matter who made it.

But that's just me. And I'm relatively new to the tube game.

Well, my logic is this: In a combo amp, you spend X minutes bombarding the hot, active tubes with vibration and sound pressure as they're a mere inches from the speaker(s). Then somehow picking up the amp and jostling it around a bit is going to make a difference? Of course you don't throw the amp down a flight of stairs, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that picking it up and moving it off the stage with care is going to hurt the valves.

Don't know. I always let them cool down before moving my tube amps and got close to 30 years from the original bottles in my Twin. I got Twenty years out of my 65 Vibrolux Reverb before it got stolen. I worry a little about severe temperature changes in the winter too.

Extreme temperature shifts can wreck a lot of things. Many a guitar finish has cracked this way.

Well the thing is, now I think I should leave it on when taking short brakes (5-10mins). Turning it off would let it cool down too much I guess in this time span.

Another thing: what exactly is the stand by mode. The stand by knob has a 'stand by' and an 'on' option. Setting this knob to 'stand by' and the other knob to 'off' would set the amp in stand by mode? Or will the stand by option overrule the other knob when it is set to the 'on' option?

The standby switch disables the B+ voltage from the power supply (that's the voltage that's applied to the plates of the power tubes) and allows the amp to idle quietly. The heater voltage is unaffected so all of the tubes are maintained in a ready-to-go state the moment the standby switch is closed.
