Shimmilou shares honors with other members here as one of the resident forum wizards for anything concerning the Hotrod/Blues Deluxe platforms and he does an exemplary job with most tube-amp and tube-related questions (especially the GT brand) as well. This place truly wouldn't be the same without him.

Hand salute, Lou!

Another option for the rectifier and power tubes for DRRI (if that's what is needed), are the TAD 6V6GT-STR and TAD GZ34/5AR4. The TAD 6V6GT in my Princeton Reverb has been pretty good throughout the summer. Though, I'll admit... with heat and the acquition of a SFSR, I haven't used the PR as much.

One thing... these TAD power tubes (and most power tubes made in China and the recent made Russian SED's) will glow purple when first started up. This is impurities cooking-off & may last a few hours before settling into usual glow. Shouldn't effect tone or bias.

Good luck with your amp.

There are great tube amp resources here on this Forum.
You have heard from a good number of them already!

I've gained a lot of knowledge from these gentlemen.

Just an FYI... here's a photo of some new SED 6550C with that purple "haze" glow. And no it ain't gonna make you sound like Hendrix. 8^)

+1 after all the years I've spent as a player,I've only been working on the insides of the amps for the last 8 or 10 years, and it can get complicated....I learn from Arjay, shimmilou and several others here, you get to a place in your career where you can recognize knowledge....vs. some guy who blows smoke as an "amp tech".
Cheers!!

I believe the "purple glow" photo is of some Audio Research Reference 300 series amp (330, I think...). Anyhow, ARC's are the cat's meow in the hi-fi world. And something else to work on. Kinda like opening the hood of a brand new Lambo Gallardo...

Thanks everybody that responded with helpful recommendations. I'm going to try the advise given to me by shimmilou and report back the results. Like many of you I have learned immense amounts of knowledge from these forums. Guys like shimmilou, Martian, nikininja, Ceri, CV, ZZDoc, and many, many, many more really have helped me considerably in the past and I appreciate any and all reponses to my quearies. I've been away for awhile and don't see some of the old familiar names but I'm sure I'll run into them sooner or later. Again thanks for the help and I will report back.

According to the test recommended by shimmilou, it appears to be my rectifier tube which is a China made Fender stamped 5AR4/GZ34 RUBY. I guess I will take the advise given and hunt down a NOS rectifier tube. Does anyone know of a site that sells reliable NOS 5AR4/GZ34 tubes. I have some JJs that I put in my Blues Jr. which I like and Russian made Tung Sols that came in my Champ 600. I will head over to ebay and see whats going on over there. Thanks again everybody. Also, will I have to make any kind of bias adjustment in my Dlx Rvb RI since I'm only replacing the rectifier?

Russ

I know some sites, but it's going to cost. Tube World has some of the best NOS Mullard made GZ34, but they start at $150+. You might want to consdier the TAD GZ34/5AR4-STR. Ppl that have used it claim it's pretty good. Much more consistent quality than other comparable new Russian or Chinese tubes.

I'm currently using a Sov-Tek GZ34 in my '64 Vibroverb. No rattles (thus far) and the amp has played reliably since I've owned it. About fifteen or twenty bucks on the bay......

I like Sovtek also. If nothing else, they are definitely rugged.

Hi guys I just wanted to report on the status of my amp. I replaced the rectifier with a TAD GZ34 STR and I really like it. Everything works great now and sounds even better. I wanted to go for the Mullards but that would be painful parting with that much cash even if I had it. Now I'm tempted to look into replacing the remaining tubes with TADs since I'm so happy with the GZ34. Again, thank you to all that have helped in solving my amp problems and thank you all that have imparted any bits and chunks of knowledge that has not only made me a better guitar player but also has helped me become a more knowledgeable guitar/amp owner (which I feel is related). You guys are awesome.

Russ
