I was all set to buy my budding guitarist teenager a DRRI this weekend ... until he spent an hour this afternoon bonding with a SS-22. Now, we're both uncertain on which Fender amp will be the best, long-term fit for him.

He currently plays a Les Paul through an Orange Tiny Terror but prefers to connect to my Mustang III when playing his Strat (in order to get more of a Fender sound).

I've been putting off buying a DRRI but the $839 sale price at GC this week seems too good to pass up. So....

Any thoughts on whether the DRRI or the SS-22 would be the best fit for his Strat and the Hendrix/Clapton/blues/classic rock sounds he plays?

I'm comfortable in the knowledge that we really can't go wrong with either amp. But I'd like to buy the one that will give him the most flexibility for years to come. TIA for any insights from folks who are familiar with both amps.

most flexibility

I'd roll with the SS 22. It has a clean channel and the OD/burn channel. That's a great deal on the DRRI but if it's flexibility you're after... the SS has a few more tricks up its sleeve. JMO...

Agreed. For someone who wants to cover a wider range of tones without experimenting with a wide range of tones, I'd pick the SS.

You never mentioned if he'd need the nice tremolo that's in the DRRI.
I wish Fender would bring the tremolo back in their "Modern" amps.

For even less money, you could get him the Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue:

They sound really sweet! I suggest you check one of those out next time you're at GC.

Hey, Cotton, how do you like your Mustang III? If something happened to it, would you buy another one?

TIA,

John

I seriously doubt that.
Maybe If they can get rid if the hiss and make it sound good over 5 on the volume dial. I'd go with the SS 60 watter over the 22. The 22 has a few well known issues.

Both amps have their issues....

Any amp will give you issues... just the nature of those lil' beasts... So lets not start the rhetorical remarks and snide comments.

...a question to those that have owned both the DRRI and the SS22.....what advantage does the SS22 possess over a DRRI w/pedal(s) of choice???? After the honeymoon period is over, how many SS22 owners are still utilizing the burn channel w/o pedals?

They're not snide remarks. They're facts. Every SS22 I've tried and have even used from time to time on out of town gigs hissed like a bag of snakes. I was actually thinking of buying one at one point until I couldn't get the noise under control. And I'll put it this was as to not get anyone's panties in a knot, I couldn't get it to sound good at anything above about half volume. It could just be as simple as a tube and bias issue or as major as a design problem.
Little girl? :? I don't recall any name calling until your response. The facts on the 22 are documented by many users as well as FMIC. Word is there was some kind of fix in the works.
And howardken52, I'm glad you like your amp and you think it does it all. That's your opinion and you're entitled to it. I think it does some things too, but not anything really that well. I also found the clean channel lacking and not that close to the DRRI when cranked. That's my opinion and I'm as entitled to it as well. Get over it. Not everyone likes Egnater gear but I don't get all defensive if someone doesn't like it. Tone and performance are all subjective. Don't take it personally

The SS22 was Fender's #4 selling amp in 2010. The DRRI was #9. It's hard to argue with the masses.

I would like to see the source for this assertion, please.

Fender will never confirm or deny this proprietary data and GC is but a small retail microcosm of the entire new amp market.

Thus without factual-and-verifable documentation, your assertion is merely speculative hypothesis.

Guitar Center means nothing. If you look at this forum, that's clearly not the case. The HRD Series seems to take that honor. I'm guessing it's the price point. The SS22 is rarely discussed and when it is, it the hiss or some other problem. I think the reissues are still very high on the list and if you broke it down by price, I bet the DRRI is a bit higher than 9th. This is purely speculation on my part and only my opinion. I see you're new here and welcome! Do a search and you'll be really surprised. I think even Egnater was discussed more than the SS22. The Super Sonic Series is rarely discussed here at all. Could be the price point also, I don't know for sure.
