Powered Toast Dude... I like 10-inch speakers, too. They seem to have a "faster reflex," for lack of a better term, that catches lead guitar nuances better (at least IMHO).

I like them un-doped, too...

That is just wrong and a commonly thought misconception.
The standby switch (on amps that have one) does not allow the tubes to cool down or discharge any high voltages.
It simply stops the power tubes from outputting, all the tube heater elements and cap voltages are maintained so the amp is instantly ready to function when taken off standby.

If it allowed anything to cool down you would have to wait for the amp to come back up to working temperatures before using it again (ie: same as if it was powered off, which is not a desired effect)

A good habit is to switch in standby in order to cool down and discharge high voltages supplies and finally switched off. When the amp temperature is reasonably down you can move it.

That's the way I see it. The standby switch actually keeps the "warmed up".

There are a few sources of heat from the output tubes in an amp at idle, in play (not in standby). The filament (heater), and the Plate dissipation being the majority of heat given from the tubes while operating. An amp with two 6L6 output tubes for example, will be dissipating 15 or more watts each tube Plate (30 watts), plus the grids, and the filaments when on and in play (very hot!). Switching an amp into standby will keep the filament on, and turn off the high voltage that is normally supplied to the output tubes' Plates. Turning off the voltage to the output tubes' Plates eliminates the Plate idle wattage of the tubes (in this case 30+ watts), letting them run much cooler than when in play.

So, switching an amp into standby, keeps the filament voltage on the tubes to keep them warm and ready to go, and turns off the Plate voltage so they aren't as hot. Switching to standby when turning an amp on, allows the tubes to warm up slowly, which is preferable for longer tube life. Switching to standby before turning an amp off allows the tubes to cool down slowly, again preferable.

Using a standby switch does indeed allow the output tubes to run cooler. Any doubt about it, thermometers are fairly cheap.

And, we shouldn't forget about the preamp tubes, as many amps' standby switch will turn of the high voltage for their Plates also, for even more heat savings in an amp while in standby. :)

Avoid the HRD. The Peavey Classic 30 is a great suggestion PTM. For you Mike http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ ... -combo-amp

I agree the classic 30 is a good amp. the over drive is way better i liked it so much i also bought a peavey classic 50/410. now i dont even touch my hotrod deville 4/10. the fender has a real good clean tone but over drive just suck. if i bought another fender amp i would get a deluxe reverb or supersonic.

go to a guitar store and try out some amps

If you just got to have Fender, because of the clean channel, then just get a tubescreamer. I had a VS Jekyll & Hyde pushing my HR Deville. Got lots of compliments on the tone. For a sound clip you can check me out http://www.myspace.com/Kemistery

This was the last band I was in, and probably the last for this genre. I'm trying to get rid of all my hard rock gear to get some gear for blues playing, then I'll start another band.

If you noticed I said 'had'. I traded the HR Deville for a half stack, which I still have. My homemade pedal board, 2 guitars and a bag of misc. cords and stuff was stolen last year. So I'm still in the process of getting new equipment.
