Hi,
I have a Fender "The Twin" it was made in october 2010.
I have read so much about the Svetlana winged C power valves that I am considering changing to them. Are they really that much sweeter than the Groove Tubes that are fitted as standard by Fender?
6L6GC I think.
I am only interested in the clean channel so would it be worth my while to try these?
Cheers,
Mel

Hope this helps

Hi bluesstrattone

"unequaled clarity and complex harmonics" sounds like what I am looking for, and it would be worth the expense to try them even tho the existing GT tubes have only 30 - 40 hours on them .
Many thanks,
Mel

Get them while you can. Winged C (=C=) SED tubes are no longer being made in the old St Petersburg plant in Russia. The fate of the SED or old Svetlana tubes is unknown at the moment.

BMW2002Ti , thanks for the heads up. I can get them here in england from watford valves. they actually have them on offer at the moment which would suggest they still have a fair stock of them. off to cyprus on holiday tomorrow, so i will have to wait till i get back.
cheers,
mel

Of the new production tubes that I've tried the Winged-C's are my favorites....get some to hold on to if you don't want to change right now.

Rebelsoul, thats what I am thinking. The price at Watford Valves has just gone up which would suggest they are getting into short supply. I will order a set when I get back from Cyprus.

A little suggestion. Pay to have the tubes matched and checked in a test amp. Late production SED (=C=) made in St. Petersberg dropped a bit in QA. At least compared to the 1990-2001 production. Unfortunately, when Eric Barbour left Svetlana (what SED was called in those days)--- the driving force for high QA also left. I noticed this in their 6L6GC, 6550C, and KT-88 tubes.

Also, for those looking for EL34 tubes. 1990-2001 Svetlana are super. As good as 1980-90's JJ E34L's.

Get them while you still can.

Watford Valves match for quads, they use extensive testing and burn them in.
see here http://www.watfordvalves.com/aboutus.asp

I have read recently that Fender tend to bias amps a bit cold from the factory.
My "The Twin" has a bias pot with a balance pot, so is user serviceable.
The recommended setting is 60mV which I assume equates to 60mA. Should I think about raising this to say 70mV to increase my clean headroom?
Or does this system not relate directly to the bias current.

Thanks for all the input, you guys have been really helpfull

Hi dawntreader,

Yes, in the case of a reading across a 1 ohm resistor, mV can be directly read as mA. Each bias test point on your amp is for two tubes, and the setting really depends on the Plate voltage. If the Plate voltage is about 465 VDC, then 70 mV would still be on the cold side (about 14 watts per tube), and you could raise it to the range of 75 mA (15 watts/tube), to 100 mA (21 watts/tube). But, check your Plate voltage and then go from there. If 465 Plate volts, then about 80 mA at either test point, would be the setting that I would go with for clean headroom (about 16 watts/tube).

Hi Shimmilou, according to my schematic, Fender drawing 57014000 rev F, test point 50 (B+?) is 470v on full power and 235v on low power. Does this mean I can do as you suggest and raise the bias to 80mA on the external pot on the back of the chassis and then adjust the balance pot to 0.00mA again?
Cheers,
Mel

Yes, that's close to what I thought it would be. The actual Plate voltage will be close to the B+ voltage, just a few volts less, but going with the B+ reading is close enough. Although, measuring your actual voltage would be the most accurate, as it can be slightly different than what the schematic shows.

With 470 VDC Plate, 80 mA at the TP would be just about right for clean headroom (about 16.5 watts per tube). You can go lower, or higher, to adjust for your desired sound.
