After 5 years or so of my wife nagging me about my lack of hearing, i thought i would explore what guitar slingers out there are putting in their ears to protect against hearing loss from loud gig amplifier volume; yet hear what the band members are playing?

thanx,
(huh, what did u say, play 'er on 10??)

I use the ear plugs that progressively cut the volumes as the dB rises. Seem to work pretty good. At least you can hear yourself playing, during moderate passages.

it's time to look after yourself before tinnitus sets in like mine ....

i've owned molded musician ear plugs ($250) for years now with 9db filters BUT ...i can tell you that rubber swimmers ear plugs for $8 at the drug store are the cats $@!! or you can try Vator drum plugs from a music retailer ....they come with two filters ...12db and 25 db if memory serves me.....the trick is rubber rather than foam!

the right ear plugs totally enhance live playing ...less headaches and fatigue at the end of the night ...clean up your perception of stage sound, relieve harshness in cymbals, snare and guitar amps

Sammy, how is your experience with the molded plugs? I am thinking about making a trip to a nearby hearing centre to see what they can do for me. I'm 23 years old, and before I invest in a truly destructive amp I feel I owe it to myself to keep my ears in good shape :!:

Really man, take care of your hearing while you're young....between loud music and firearms my ears ring like a fire alarm....sometimes the "volume" in one ear or other will suddenly decrease, like someone turned a knob down...scary!
btw,I'm in my late 50s,wish I had taken care of my hearing.

+1000!

Be forewarned and take appropriate precautions.

I can only echo what everyone else has to say; Protect Your Ears. Years of playing way too loud, way too close to my amp and then the icing on the cake, firing a .50 cal machine gun with improperly inserted ear plugs, has left me missing the majority of the hearing in my right ear; I can hear the constant ringing just fine however.
Now that I know better, I always use the standard foam rubber type ear plugs you can buy for next to nothing at most hardware stores, they do just fine, but most music stores carry a few different varieties of ear plugs designed specifically for musicians. You might try checking those out.

This is really great advice. I've been playing drums and guitar all my life, plus I work in a metal fabrication facility, which is pretty loud too. The problem is that I'm a supervisor and I have to talk to people constantly, and I end up either inadvertantly yelling at them or speaking too softly. These musician's ear plugs seem to be what I need. You'd think I would have known about this by now lol. I'd certainly suffered some hearing loss and I'm just 34. :(

I was chatting with my girlfriend the other day about the tinnitus we often get from much live music across the years. We mused whether you could work out the pitch of your tinnitus, which led on to thinking about whether different people had different pitches of whines going on in their heads? IF you could somehow mic up peoples tinnitus you could get a whole tinnitus orchestra going!! Now that would be somethng new in music.

anyway...

There is finally a treatment they are working on. It is a nerve stimulation thing that "resets" your auditory system and gets rid of the ringing sensation it is producing to counter the loud noise you have been exposed too. It was used for something else and then people with tinnitus reported it got rid of it. Can't remember the name of it but early results are said to be promising.

The great thing about hearing loss is that you'll no longer be able to hear the lady in your life nagging you

Seriously though... I suffer from it too but it's been years since I've practiced crammed into a room with two guitars, a bass and drums... that's what did my hearing in. I never liked using ear plugs as I always felt it sounded like I was underwater...and then of course I'd just turn up to compensate.

These days I'm much happier to play at a reasonable volume and while my hearing has suffered a bit over the years, I'm hopeful it won't get too much worse but who knows... it is a serious issue though and one that I'm sure many of us can relate to.
