Hi all.
I ve picked up a 2nd hand BDRI. In top condition and around a year old. The fella sold it due to being to loud for home use and only used it a few times in the studio.
My question is this. On the clean channel, the cleaness breaks up very early. Around 2 1/2 on the volume. Any chords strummed with this setting turn to mush. I know these amps are set to have an eary break up but is this normal? I dont recall others i ve tried being like this. All the valves are standard and my guitar is a CS strat with CS69s. So not high output at all. I have to back the guitar volume right off to clean it up, so much so that it sounds a tad stifled.
Thanks in advance.

You may want to check the amp's bias (power tubes). Sounds like it maybe a tad too hot. Then, check the tubes for correct type in correct sockets. And their strength.

As others here will verify, I've spent a lot of time tweaking my BDRI. The easiest way to reduce the overall volume and avoid early breakup is to decrease the gain of the preamp. The BDRI comes stock with Groove Tube 12AX7s in V1, V2, and V3 and Groove Tube 5881/6L6s in V4 and V5. In my amp I have replaced the preamp tubes with a JAN Philips 5751 (V1), JJ 12AX7 (V2), and a JJ 12AT7 (V3). This combination cuts the total preamp gain by about 1/2. I also use JJ 6L6GCs biased at about 36 mA plate current/413 VDC plate voltage. This tube combination smooths out the amp considerably and allows me to set the clean volume at "6" for a nice clean tone. I also replaced the stock speaker with an Eminence Cannabis Rex which provides smoother highs and non-farty bass. Others may have favorite tube combinations that provide similar results.

2 and half ? On mine it is more than 8 with a strat and around 6 with humbuckers (Spax7 at V1 and V2, JJECC83 balanced at PI, origin Sovteck at push-pull).

May be issue with bias or one valve failure, or valves huuuuge bias mismach. Also try amp-out on another power amp to make sure the preamp is OK. 8)

i wasn't able to get my bdri to break up early enough so i did a bit of research and checked out some threads on this site and installed some tung-sol 6L6str early breakup(1-3) and put some gt 12ax7-c (v1 and v2)and a jj 12at7(v3) and now i get the breakup i wanted and it is real smooth and resoponsive. i can even get some jtm-45 tones from it. maybe this guy bought an amp with 1-3 breakup tubes. fortunatly for him the original owner found out the hard way they are loud amps. not for apartment use or near mean neighbors. fix it and keep it. i love mine and i get some good compliments about the tones i can coax from it. remember these are tube amps and most are dependant on guitar volume and what hits the front end of it.

Try a new Phase Inverter tube, tube just before the output tubes

Just got back from my local guitar shop and I'm a tad bemused to be honest. I A/Bd it against a new one and my one sounded much better with no early break up whatsoever. Lovely warm clean right up to 6 on the amp volume! Felt a bit of a dick to be honest after explaining my problem to the guitar shop and making sure it was ok to take it in to try.
I haven't tried it in a studio yet. Only indoors and the shop. Could I have been the room accoustics indoors affecting the sound to this degree. I gonna hold on till Monday eve studio session and see how it goes before I jump to any conclusions.
